Aftermarket air boot quality?
« on: August 31, 2018, 03:28:11 PM »
After having my world turned topsy-turvy today when I discovered that aftermarket carb kits are suspect here, i must ask this question: Are the reproduction carb to airbox rubbers any good? I only need one but would buy a set if I could have assurance they will fit correctly.

They fit OK, as far as life span, I have a feeling they are not that super, but I would never spend the money on NOS Honda insulators.

I put a set on my 78 750f. They fit good but i got air leaks from using stainless worm drive hose clamps. Got some 44mm honda clamps to see if that solves it. Side by side they looked the same except not dry and cracked.

The aftermarket (EMGO) versions are reported to have short life (2-3 years) here in these forums. The Honda ones last longer, but even they are undersized in OD, requiring some extra work to make them seal well. I have been using either CB550 hose clamps and/or the Oetiker adjustable (#50-9) type, but be careful with the latter: they are aircraft worm-gear hi-torque type and can cut the rubber in two with seemingly little screwdriver force!

I get them at Sound Sound Honda here:
http://shop.hondabikes.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=392557&category=Motorcycles&make=Honda&year=1974&fveh=12380
They are #8 (16211-300-030) and #9 (16212-300-03). Honda calls them "insulators".

South Sound Honda is a great dealer and they have the cheapest part prices I have found as well as they are economical on their shipping.

I buy OEM parts directly from a gentleman who sells on eBay (forget his eBay store name but his name his Joe Marks) and because he doesn't have to pay eBay/PP fees, he can usually beat any price I've found. If you want to try him, his contact is jtmarks@hvc.rr.com. He also charges actual shipping costs. I've also used South Honda and have always gotten good service.

+1 on Mr. Marks: I get stuff from him, too.
