750K K7 side cover crack
« on: September 23, 2018, 08:15:57 AM »
I suspected it will happen and it did ... When removing left side cover, it cracked...
Now thinking what to do. Maybe put metallic plate and using rivets +glue to fix.

Does anyone know what kind of plastic it is?

Or any other better idea?

I check ebay quickly for another one but did not find any (painted with original Excel Black)
Replica is the last option

It is bound to happen on 40+ year old plastic covers.  I've had success using JB WEld epoxy on the back side.
And put a little grease on the post before inserting it [thats what she said!]

I have done the JB Weld before also. Take some sandpaper and clean and scuff the plastics well that you apply the weld to for better adhesion. As Steve says get some grease on those rubber grommets and posts.

I was using grease on these rubber grommets since beginning but this one (upper left) was always going very hard. I think I'll grind it a bit to be sure it goes very easy...

Thanks for the tip hope I'll find such bond in Europe.

Nobody has clue what plastic it is?

I just repaired my sideshields K7 cracks with a soldering iron melting the plastic together on the inside
on the outside epoxy filler and grinding and then painting

You can also use simple 2-part epoxy that comes in those dbl. syringe applicators available at most hardware stores.  It's basically the same material as the side cover.  Clean the area really well, sand it. maybe even groove out the crack on both sides a bit, and fill with the 10 minute drying epoxy.  Seriously good bond if prepped correctly.  At $5.00..very inexpensive, too.

I also have used the JB Weld after using sandpaper to give it something to bite too. When you remove the covers try to push the pegs from the back and don't pull from the front if possible. It always works on mine.

Yeah, push from back helps.
But... I put new gromet (genuine Honda), hoping that it is soft enough + grease, but still it managed crack..

JB weld products ordered, hope I fix it properly. I'll grind that one bit to slide in & out easier to derisk crack again

My 76 side cover cracked in two places.  I cleaned it real well and lightly sanded the back.  I used CA glue with baking soda.  This was 3 years ago and it is still solid.  A trick is to use the thin CA glue holding the painted side up and be sure the crack is matched up and together tight and then carefully squeeze the CA bottle so just a smidge of liquid starts coming out and have it wick into the crack from the bottom.  Once it cures (few minutes) you can then use the medium body CA glue and put a thin layer of baking soda on the inside where the crack is and then layer some CA on it and repeat the process until you have a good backing to support the cracked area.  Letting the thin CA glue wick into the crack while holding the pieces tight together and painted side up you prevent drips and runs on the paint.  If you have clean edges and do a careful job you will not be able to see the crack from a few feet away.

2nd pic, do not pull on far left side.
Undo lower peg first, then move side cover up and down , while putting outward pressure on the top pegs or beside them.
If they are coming off hard put a couple drops of oil by the grommet.
