How "cold blooded" does a well running 750A run?
« on: November 15, 2018, 07:37:39 PM »
Hi - first post here - great site!  I am a long time Kaw triple owner, but recently inherited a really really clean and all stock '77 750A from my brother to get running and possibly sell.  I was hoping to tap into the knowledge base here to determine whether or not this bike is running like a normal good-running stock 750A would run, or not ..  I owned a '77 750A decades ago and put a bunch of miles on it, but that is so long ago I can't really remember how it ran.

Background - my brother bought this in 2012 from org owner with just 9K miles on the clock.  He puttered it around town for a couple of thousand miles then in 2016 he stored it without draining the carbs.  I got it this summer after sitting 2 years.  I pulled the carbs and as expected, they float bowls were crudded up..  I cleaned everything very well, pulled all jets, cleared the float valves, all jets, etc..  I had no experience w/ accelerator pump carbs so didn't mess with that other than pushing the plunger a couple of times and inspecting it (didn't seem stuck or crudded up).

The inside of the tank was perfect, fuel flow is good to carbs, plugs are fine, I didn't mess with ignition other than replacing battery.  Bike has just 11K org miles and although I didn't do compression test, it feels/sounds tight and does not smoke ..

After putting the cleaned carb bank back on and new battery, oil change, etc.. it fired right up, but took a long time (10 mins+) to warm up.  Coughed, spit, all cyls seemed to be at same temp.  Would not idle with full choke unless I gave a bit of throttle.  After 5 mile ride though, it seemed to settle down.  Idles fine, smooth, not rough (all cyls there).  It pulls off idle smooth ..  Still backfires occasionally though.

What I'm looking for here is whether or not this is somewhat normal for the 750A - that is, is it an unusually cold-blooded beast?  I just can't really remember how mine ran 25 years ago ..  I read a bit about accelerator pump problems which would seem likely given that it sat for 2 years .., but I'm not so sure given that it runs pretty smooth once warmed up.

Any help/insight is appreciated!

My 750A could be considered very cold blooded. It will fire up quickly, idle smoothly after a little assistance, but needs to be warmed up before pulling out. Compared to my other 4 cylinder Hondas, it does need a little more warm up time, but I think that with the other bikes, I can work the clutch a little to compensate for the cold engine, an option I don't have with the A. The A runs fairly lean even when warm so I'm sure that the accelerator pump has to be working properly to run correctly, especially when cold. I've had some multi carb bikes that one or two of the accelerator nozzles were plugged and it's caused cold running problems. I'm sure that Honda wouldn't have bothered with an accelerator pump if it wasn't needed. Use a mirror to look into the throat of each carb to verify flow from the nozzles and verify that the pump has the full stroke.
