Weight of wheels
« on: November 24, 2018, 02:31:16 PM »
I have replaced the steel wheels on my '77 K7 750 with aluminum wheels and hubs from a 750A. Just curious.. anyone know how much un-sprung weight I have eliminated?

Interesting question, but I think you are one of few who possesses both kinds of wheels, shouldn't you have weighed them before mounting?

One would think so. I have never been accused of thinking ahead logically. Both front and rear were e-bay items that have been re-spoked. I am left to wonder why Honda never mounted the aluminum rims on the 750K.

Cost is the answer
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

I recently weighed a stock steel 19”x1.85 rim versus an 18”x2.15 Excel rim. The weight difference was 1.4#. Less than you’d think is my answer.
I can believe that. Just lifting the wheels, there doesn't seem much difference in weight. The appearance however makes them look so much lighter

Excel may weigh more than a did alloy rim.
An  Akron shoulderless  would be way lighter than an Excel..
But they look better than steelies....

1.4 lbs makes more of a difference when you spin it at 60mph
If it works good, it looks good...

I was trying to find some weights last night, found out Excel makes a lighter series.. I didn't know that.
