Need Headlight Help
« on: November 25, 2018, 02:03:05 PM »
For the second time, a bulb burned out.  It happens. Voltage is ok.  I had a Philips h4 +130 extreme vision bulb and I'm using a Bosch reflector with a H/M relay.  The bike is stock, electrically.  When I put the last bulb in, the low beam could hardly be seen let alone used.  Had to use high beam all the time.  What I would hope is that someone that loves their headlight could give me the name of the specific bulb so I could go out and but a couple.
Thanks for reading.

Hi ED
I have a 71 750 also.  The stock headlight was a Westinghouse 6014.   I replaced mine with a H6024 from the auto parts store, works great.

OK there are 2 ways a bulb can blow:-

(1) the filament melts and you see melted metal inside

This is caused by excessive voltage, possible bad ground or crap bulb

(2) the filament is intact but rolling arround loose or dissconnecred at one end.

This is caused by excessive vibration or crap bulb

You are aware you're not to touch the bulb with your fingers? The Philips moto lamps are known good to resist vibrations.

Phillips are known to resist NORMAL vibrations but if the fork damping is too stiff or tyre rubber too hard/deformed etc all bets are off

Must modern H4 can be touched without blowing it was the old quartz ones that went and then it was obvious as the "glass" tube had a hole where the finger grease was

I wonder what your source is. Mine (plural) are several tests where this lamp came out best. The Germans in particular commented: "Sehr gut" and "sehr empfehlenswert" . The Philips moto was designed with the vibrations in mind that typically occur much more on motorcycles and the 'moto' therefore got a special clamp. I agree with the second part of your comment though where you say

I have used Extreme Vision H7 in my car. Lifetime sucks, but light is good! Less than a year, around 8000-10000km.
My CB750 has LED H4 that work fine, especially the lower wattage at low rpm riding keep voltage up. No charging issues.

The lifetime of the X-treme vision is indeed shorter than the other Philips H4s. Philips itself is clear about it and specifies the hours you can expect (ca 450hrs). The longlife H4, offering more hours is the Ecovision* (>1000 hrs). Can't wait to try that X-tremevision out myself, but my old Philips Visionplus (in use over 25 years) refuses to die. Osram Nightbreakers proved also excellent bulbs in tests.
* The Ecovsion also draws 20% less.

Osram Nightbreakers also known to not live long. The dark winter we have here is worth it anyway.
Vibrations might kill them quicker on a bike. Philips is otherwise a good brand, often said to withstand overcharging better than other brands like Osram. Try the Philips Premium H4, low price and durable.

Philips has a LED version too,  Philips X-tremeUltinon LED. NOT cheap. I wonder if it is better than the cheap China LED bulbs.

My new cb500K2 went through tow bulbs in two weeks. Then never blew another one.

Sylvania used to be a Philips daughter but was abandoned. I know nothing about the quality.
For the time being I would not go LED but await further developments. Led needs relatively little energy and can generate much light. But... other drivers than you can also have led lights and there lies one of the problems. Glare over the mirrors is frequent, the more when there's a SUV or a truck on high wheels behind you or when cars go over a speed bump. You'll be blinded and for seconds will not see anything. The British RAC held a survey last winter: 67% of their members complained about the glare of the new headlights. Predecessor Xenon was also annoying triggering migraine attacks with people susceptible for this. The colour - both Xenon and Led tend to blue - is maybe a factor. The human eye prefers the somewhat more yellowish light that conventional bulbs and halogen offer. When hit directly by these new lights, this is what happens: the light will reflect by the fluid in the eyeball resulting in stray light on the retina > all of a sudden you're in a fog, even more so when the eyefluid is a bit mirky which is with all of us when we get older. What does not help either, is that the pupil that meets bright light, will contract fast but, with the light disappearing, will dilate much and much slower. That's how we are built. Also an annoying afterimage can occur being an 'imprint' of the lightsource but than in negative. All this together can result in seeing nothing for seconds, an unwanted situation whilst driving.

Agree about the new way too bright car headlights! They should be banned. At the same time with no rear lights at all even in twilight and darker. Again idiot politicians that decide details they do not understand.

It will be a war on the roads when all are blinded by the others bright lights. Use even stronger lights to see anything and add extra LED bar to fire in the other faces when not go LO from Hi in time.

I have very bright H7 LEDs according to the add that wait to be mounted in my car. I have to measure the current first since the add say 250W/pair which must be wrong. >10A each? Probably not. Best to check first before the wiring and connectors will burn.
EDIT: Measured 2.65-2.7 A which means 30W as claimed for the LED H4 my CB750 has.
If OK, people with newer cars beware, time for sunglasses! ;)

I use the Sylvania H6024 like jtunberg: 15+ years, 30000+ miles and I'm a lights on all the time rider. It is durable. I stayed away from the higher performance, shorter life bulbs. There is only one headlamp on my CB, and I don't want to be riding in the dark. I was sold by the "robust filament design" claim.

Reading the above, I recognise the Philips' R&D.
