Steel Brake Tube - Stuck
« on: December 18, 2018, 09:47:37 AM »
I'm rebuilding the brakes on my 400F, hoping to install SS lines here one day. However I am first painting the bike and this includes the caliper. I cannot get the steel tube off of the caliper, or the section of brake line that it attaches to.

There is a 10mm nut on the caliper end, and a 10mm nut to 17mm nut connection on the brake line end. Both are incredibly tight, and I am finding that the little 10mm nuts would rather round of than start turning.

Use a flare wrench, rather than a standard open end wrench.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

I'll see if I can find one of these today. It prevents the rounding off? Thanks!

If you don't plan on reusing the line, you could cut it and use a 6 sided wrench or socket.

Heat and vise grips will get it off

I had planned to reuse it. I haven't tried anything other than wrenching yet because it was so stuck I thought I might be missing a step or doing something wrong.

PB Blaster might help. Spray and let set a little while.

Propane torch and "canned air" duster spray can. Heat the area of the fitting with the torch... not melting hot but any remaining brake fluid should be smoking. Invert the canned air and spray the liquid onto the steel fitting where it threads in, that cools it off very fast. Try your wrench again. This has worked for me for several fasteners. You can also use freeze spray - made for removing gum from carpet.
