Swingarm bushings all I need?
« on: June 06, 2005, 07:47:39 PM »
I was sitting on the bike today with it on the centerstand and when I pushed the back brake I noticed the swingarm moved 1/8-1/4" side to side. Will swingarm bushings($26+ a piece Ouch)fix this or do I also need something else? Thanks, Jimmy.

You do not mention what bike, but if it is the typical Honda arrangement, then you will also probably need the centre sleeve/collar.
If you think the bushes are expensive......  There are several needle roller conversions, that appear on eBay from time to time.

When replacing these bushes, you should also check the spindle for wear.

You can find bronze bushings on eBay too, for 1/2 the price you mention.  Last year I picked up a NOS sleeve and a set of bronze bushings.  I hope to install them in the next couple of weeks.  Keep your eyes peeled.

The bushes are cheap, but the sleeves are expensive, quite often they're badly pitted by rust caused by no maintenance and water ingress. Because I have my own lathe, I machine the sleeve then turn up new "undersize" (smaller ID) bushes.

If your sleeve is still a close fit in a new set of bronze bushes (you'll need to install them to check as the ID tightens up slightly when the bushes are pressed into your swingarm) just grease it up and shove it back in! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

As an ex Mechanic the steel sleeve ie always more worn than the composite bushes and all should be replaced as a set. Here in UK bushes £8 each and spindle £25
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

The only bushings I see say they are for 76-79 Cb750s. These had different bushings? Thanks, Jimmy.
