Vintage CB750 based rear engine 4 wheel dragsters
« on: December 27, 2018, 04:20:31 pm »
So I’ve seen photos of a number of these old CB750 based dragsters over the years.  Triple A built 3 of them, Action Fours built at least one.  There were others...

I’m assuming these were built to race in a certain class back in the 70s.  Can someone enlighten me as to what type of class they were meant to race?

Thx,

George

Looks like I asked before I looked far enough.🙄

Junior comp dragster:  up to 16yr old for 1/8 mile.  Anything over in the adult class for 1/4 mile.

Imagine one with a modern one liter plus motor. I've seen them at Pomona on display.

Don, a good friend of mine was behind the Action Fours machines.
Bill Hahn of Hahncraft is the son of the founder Bill Hahn Snr and is a member of our forum.
I have seen modern motors in some of the junior dragsters in the UK and Finland
but I'm not sure why the want to spend vast amounts of money when they all run to a dial in ET system.

bike powered dragsters are still around.  A girl drives one at the track my son races at.   He drove it for her once then she sprained her ankle.  Had a big suki motor running 12s if i remember.  Was just part of a dial class.

In the mid '80s after crashing his Funnybike, a pal built a turbo-nitrus Kawi combo little dragster that ran 7.90's - when it didn't break.  ::)
I'm seeing more of the bike powered dragsters at West Coast tracks that have long been the domain of the NHRA Jr. Dragster programs, NHRA's stepping stone to becoming professional level drivers. I spoke with one group that had both in their pit, they said the older kid outgrew the horsepower of the Jr, and this was an easy way to go fast. He ran brackets, while the younger boy still competed in the sanction Jr. program. Guys can get pretty creative with a bike motor build rather cheaply, I've even seen a few on the bottle.
Not to say there haven't been some pretty bad a$$ Briggs & Stratton 5hp engine based Jrs out there though.
In '95 we took a Funnycar to Australia to run their National Championship series, along with the owner's sons no-expense spared all billet motor methanol burning Jr. Dragster. The promotors had to give that thing extra pit space as it was constantly surrounded by herds of amazed dads, both racers and fans, and during exhibition runs the starting line was packed. The kid ran 83mph in the 1/8th mile - with a lawn mower engine. Oh dear, how quick did you say your CB 750 is?  ::)

I'd love to see some pics of those Baby Funnycars.

But Robbie, how much does an all billet Briggs and Stratton style motor cost compared with the lawn mower variety ?
Do they not all still run dial in ET irrespective of which motor they choose ?

Brian, providing there isn't a minimum lower time cut off, anything can win an Dial in ET race.

Meydo, yes he worked for AEE, and built frames for them and himself.. I actually remembered his name was Dave.
But the bike in the pic he built  under the name Amani.  Same painter, Molly ..who designed Kawi green..
I found an excellent website about AEE last night, got lost in there for an hour or two..
 Look up history of AEE..

Sam I was told those Billet Bullets now run about $6k, and run 1/8 mile heads-up 7.90/85mph class. Wow.
Some years ago one of my pals had pitched the idea of building a couple of baby funnycars, but I'd never seen these bodies before now. Thanks for sharing - love 'em. Oh to be younger and ambitious again.
I think those SOHC midget motors would make great dragster power.  ::)

This car is for sake if anyone is interested. Needs to be completed but the engine is a brand new build. Never run. 1394 Kawasaki engine. The front end on the car was newly redone by the owner before funds got low. Unfortunately he got cancer and passed away earlier this year. He was a great friend of mine. He was also a forum member. Went by the name of Voodooracer. Keith LeBlanc. His wife needs to liquidate this thing.

I noticed you can buy a nice S&S Harley motor for less than guys are spending on billet Briggs style engines. We won a lot of jr. races not going quicker than 9.20's. My two daughters met in four finals.
