Side Panel Badge Repair
« on: January 04, 2019, 02:04:00 am »
The side panel badges on my 550 were both missing one of the little plastic pins that attach them to the side panels. After considering what repair scheme I could use I opted for a glue on replacement. It is made of aluminium has an M3 thread and a large diameter head which has a 0.025mm (0.010") thickness, which will sit below the outer border of the badge. Using the side panel as a jig the pin was bonded in place with Gorilla glue (polyurethane) Not being too keen on using the clutch washers again as they will destroy the pins with any subsequent removal I ran an M3 die down the other pins so I could use nuts to hold the badges in place. As the original clutch washers would not tighten, only hold the badges in place it just a matter of "torqueing" the nuts down until there is no gap and presto! This repair would also allow future removal of the badges without risk of damage.

Well done, I really like that.   Please tell me what these fasteners are called or where to look for them,   I need some.

Thanx in advance. kb

+1 on where to find these pins. I have a few badges in my stash that are missing pins.

I turned them on my lathe. The requirements are large diameter head for bonding strength, thin head to sit below edge of badge and of course the pin. I did consider silver soldering a 3mm stud onto some shim material for the same result.
