Better to check the trip meter and change to reserve in time.
Not fun when it runs out of gas in the city.
K6 tank much easier then.
I always fill up at approx 120 miles on the trip meter on the 750/4's and at about 100 miles on my 550/500 and 400. That ensures I never have to go onto reserve anyway ☺️☺️☺️
Trust me I'm a Nurse, I promise it won't hurt....much

The petcock location change happened at the same time the new US federal motor vehicle safety standards that went into effect in 1974.
Although the petcock location isn't specifically mentioned the operation of the petcock is designated.
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,102388.msg1145066.html#msg1145066

Since these changes weren't required outside the US the change over happened later for non-US models.

I've learned quite a few times over the years how far my 750's will go before I finally open the petcock - whoops  :D One time I forgot and pulled out in some fast heavy traffic from an intersection with a rush of cars coming at me when it blubbered and fell on its face. Luckily I could get to the side of the road while it recovered.

I get nervous at about 85 miles (in town) and 120 miles (freeway) and switch it early, then find gas!
I never fill it all the way to the top, either, unless I'm touring. Call me OCD (or something)...

Thanks!
Bike with its parts are rather new.

I have been close to stop sometimes when I forgot to switch to normal open from reserve when refilling. Found out in the last minutes not far from a gas station.

I often forget to open the petcock. ;)
Last summer a final stop in a curve and a real uphill when leaving a bike and car meet in the countryside.
Full choke, petcock on, a little to more throttle while starting it while avoiding rolling backwards with several bikes behind me. This was my brown K2.
My K6 has easier starting carbs with acc pump.

Plus numerous of other petcock offs I usually hear when happen, bike still rolling fine.
I need a routine to always check. I do not forget to close it.

I never fill it all the way to the top...

I don't as well.

A buddy who had an original paint on his K2 had a large stain on his tank from overfilling and the gas [expanding?] leaked out of the tank when it was left on the side stand.

Fill it up and park the bike is a huge no-no. Especially sidestand.
I rode south to Austria-Italy in the 80's. Beside Autobahn gas stations where they filled tank for me while still on the bike. Removed the tank bag first.
After refill, parked bike on sidestand and went for a coffee and a smoke. When back to bike I saw smoke from it when fuel flowed out and over the hot engine.
Raised bike and opened-closed  the fuel cap. Nervous moment when turning on the ignition.

A hot engine will heat up the tank with fuel that expand.

I usually fill max when I'm going for a ride.
Filling up the tank with often colder fuel need a ride quickly.
Tank did not mind, I had painted it with Sikkens 2k clear.
Yamiya tank paint durable too. No stains on my blue after small overflows. My brown has thick layers of rattle can 2k clear.

An occasional over flow should not hurt the original, or a fully cured high quality re-paint...maybe if left to soak? but who does that?  Gasoline should evaporate off the tank surface very fast, but never the less you will see the gas stained and faded tanks often.  Makes you wonder what has been put in our gas over the years.

Now that you mention this, PeWe, I think I got into the "don't fill it up" habit when I was touring with my (first) tankbag. It got fuel-soaked one hot afternoon when I filled up and went into the gas station to get a drink: came out and there was gas all down the side of the bike - and in my clothes! :(

Here is my 1975 K2.
Frame number K2 series, engine as the actual  year.
Tank is verified to be the bike's original, paint not.
I repainted it with a brown I saw on a car.
Original was Briar Brown.
Europeen K2 looked different than US version with some K1 details as also the K6 got here except K6 petcock on left side.

PeWe..... I like that brown more and more. I used a FORD pick up truck colour on this K1. It was very close.

Yes, red-brown metallic with thick coat of clear look nice in the sunshine. ;)
Not that common either.
Mine is Peugeot copper metallic.
Black primer + copper metallic followed by clear within 30 minutes after last layer of copper metallic.
Let it cure for a week, sand it, graphics  on. Let it dry a week, a few layers of clear more.

Very good timing for this topic...

We know that there are rebuild kits for the right-side fuel petcocks from Honda; they include the 4-hole rubber seal and the strainer and the o-ring.
But is there a repair kit for the left-side petcock, the one with the conical plastic insert-thing? Mine is dripping fuel out of the outlet when the petcock in in the OFF position. If there is, does anyone have the partnumber?

I have doctored these up before and got them to seal, at least temporarily.  You can take them apart and just clean and polish everything a little.  Can't hurt but some times they are too worn.
