What Model CB500 Four Do I Have?
« on: March 13, 2019, 07:11:23 PM »
The title for my CB500 Four says 1973, but after viewing a chart in this forum I am not certain if it is actually a 1973 or 1972. I’m including photos of the engine and frame numbers along with the chart I found in this forum.

K1.  Your title says 1973 cuz that was the year it was first sold.  An old practice by some DMVs back in the day.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

I've posted elsewhere as recently as tonight that Honda retitled left over bikes. Your 73 probably has the smaller diameter gauges. (mine did) A true 1973 has the big ones. Honda paid me $37 after selling me a left over 72 as a new 73, sorry but it happened. There was a class action lawsuit filed in New York, a lot of folks credit this to the local DMV, but it was Honda making new titles.  I contend this is why in early 75 Honda went into 76 production, as a poke at the legal system.

Here in UK the authorities state the year of first sale on the paperwork and dont care about year of manufacture unless you can PROVE its over 40 yrs old

My CB750 K6 was produced 1976, shipped to Sweden sept/oct 1976. Registration say year 1977 which caused some surprises when ordering parts. 4-1 was one.
Same with cars back then, next year model end of the year before, Q3-Q4.

Honda might have had left over bikes they sold the year after? If they produced more than they sold...

Manufactures also nearly all star production of "next years" model arroung August/September to account for shipping times to get to dealers in new year.

The year is irrelevant. My bike was first registered february 1977, meaning it has then been handed over by the dealer to the 1st owner that took it to the street. Who knows how long it had been at the dealers or when it was imported? When it was built? Who knows? The parts may have been assembled years and years apart. I don't rule out mine was in a batch of leftover engines, that to empty the shelf it occupied, was given various parts you find on the CB550K2. All I know, after comparing my engine- and framenumbers with those listed in the first few pages of the CB500 Parts Lists, is, mine is a CB500K2-ED and that's all what matters. I'm a happy man know. Not before, when e-ve-ry manual I got my hands on, was frustratingly incorrect. That period lasted over 25 years and only this year 2019! I've managed to find the appropiate wiring diagram for my model. BTW, this is the kind of info, you will not find in the fiches, as displayed by CMSNL. Neither do you find info there concerning colour codes, carb numbers, etc. Just leave the 'year' to advertisers:
LOOK! Our 1975 model now features bigger indicators and a bigger taillight!!! Isn't that great?! Hey, isn't that what you always wanted? Bigger? The 1975 Honda, now bigger than ever before. I'm lovin' it! For sound info go here: http://www.honda4fun.com/materiale-documentazione-tecnica/parts-list/parts-list-cb500 and http://www.honda4fun.com/materiale-documentazione-tecnica/parts-list/parts-list-cb550 It's the first thing you should do when you acquire a CB500/550.
Stop talking years. It doesn't mean a thing, does not refer to reality and much too often leads to confusion.

I also have a '73 (probably) CB500 - got it a few weeks ago. A buddy who's in his fifties came by and took a look. He said "Wow. Very cool. But, it doesn't look 46-years-old..." He paused; then: "Oh *$@&. If something vintage doesn't look vintage... that means I'm vintage."
