Oil Change After Sitting For 3 Years
« on: March 24, 2019, 04:09:34 PM »
Hey everyone! So my 1975 CB550 has been sitting for about 3 years, without running. When I parked it, it was already due for an oil change. Its currently not running. Is there anything extra I should/could do when changing the oil, to make sure I get all of the old nasty stuff out?

Typically I run the bike for a minute or two before I change the oil to warm everything up. Since its currently not running I cant do that. Should I wait on the oil change, until I get it running? I dont know if running it with the current oil in is a good idea, since its pretty nasty.
Its hard to be wrong when you know nothing!

+1 to Bobarama. Oil is cheap. Even if you don’t get to work on it soon, dump the old oil. There are corrosive contaminants in there.......

First thing I ever do when I get a new project, and most are not runners, is to dump whatever oil is in it and start with fresh and a new filter then work on the carbs and other things to get it up and running. Second oil change can happen after some miles.

In your case I would just drain the old oil without first warming the engine. Everything that's not in suspension will be at the bottom of the oilpan by now and so will be flushed out. Just refill with new oil. Done.
