found my oil leak - CB400F
« on: May 04, 2019, 08:41:42 AM »
I just had a major success with some ultraviolet oil leak detecting dye. I found the oil leak which has been bothering me for a few weeks now.  It's leaking past one of the cylinder head nuts on one of the front centre studs and dribbling down the stud onto the top side of the bottom fin of the barrels.

I'm sure this is not news to some of you but thought I'd share it because I'd never heard of the stuff in 40 years  diy fiddling  with engines and it took about 5 minutes to add to the oil, circulate it and spot the leak with a UV torch.

Well worth the 15 quid it cost me on Amazon, branded "Ring". (Including the torch).

Are you replacing a head gasket to fix it?

I'd try a copper washer under the regular washer and nut.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

It already has a copper washer but I think I've found the cause - somehow a solitary serrated flanged nut snuck in there last time I put it back together. These should be domed nuts, and I'm guessing a non-domed nut with an open top will provide a pathway for oil to seep down the threads? Also the serrations may not make an effective seal against the copper washer?

2 lessons to myself here: first, UV dye is great for finding oil leaks; second, I wouldn't have needed it if if I had been a little more careful when I put it back together last time.

I'm strangely relieved it's likely to be down to my error during reassembly, because the other option would have been to change the head gasket, but thats obviously a bit more of a pain in the a.

Looking at the exploded diagrams in the manual  it seems all but 4 of the head nuts should be domed nuts.I plan replacing these all one at a time ( the rest are non serrated open nuts) retorquing as I go, trying not to disturb the head gasket. I will do that next weekend when my domed replacements have arrived. I'll let you know how I get on.

Replaced 8 of the head nuts with domed, and used new copper washers. Did them one at a time, retorqing to full spec in one go, to avoid disturbing the head gasket.

Went for a spin and the leak is fixed. Happy again.
