Topic: Need help identifying stock rear hub - 76 CB750F

Hello everyone. First time poster, long time lurker. I have recently picked up my first sohc 4, it is a beautiful 1976 Cb750f. Everything with the exception of the 16” rear wheel and muffler seems to be original. I would like to switch back to an original 18” rim. I am hoping that the previous owner simply laced a 16 onto the factory hub. The axle, brake, rotor and chain adjusters all look original. I just wanted to be sure before I bit the bullet on buying a new 18” rim and corresponding spokes. Pictures attached and any help is greatly appreciated.

Looks like an original hub.
Someone went to a lot of trouble to lace the 16" rim, you should be happy !

I honestly don’t think it looks too bad, I would just rather have the 18 for originality’s sake. What is the benefit of swapping the 16 on anyways? Other than being able to run a beefier tire?

It was very cool back in the day.
One of my friends laced 16" rim on his cb750.
Another friend, not be out done laced a 15" rim and car tire.

Gotcha. I know it was big with the chopper crowd and whatnot. It’s was just surprising to me to find a nearly all original bike with nothing else modified but the rear wheel.

  Looks like a nice clean bike.I too would be going back to an 18 incher. The 16" 'hog' rim looks in good shape,choppers guys would be interested.  How many miles are on the bike ?

Thanks. It’s is the cleanest “barn find” Cb750 I have ever seen. It has just over 22,000 miles. Runs and rides great.

So is the “common swap” typically done using the factory 18” hub and just lacing it onto a 16” rim?

Yes. I imagine that there was a kit readily available back in the day to make it easy to do.

Yeah you just need a spoke kit and a rim.
 We used 16, because they lasted longer,  and had a bit more bite. Plus run with low pressure they have a bit of give on a chopper frame.. back around 1975 Yokohama made  a 4.60 x 18, that was bigger than all the rest at the time.. and that was maybe a 120.

Awesome. Thanks a lot for the info. I just ordered a new D.I.D 18” and am going to send off my hub and rim to Buchanan in CA to lace it up for me.
