I have found the problem the brass overflow tubes are letting by at the joint with the carb bowl. It looked like the fuel was getting by at the base of the brass overflow tube inside the flat bowl and into the lower section of the over flow pipe making it look like the float height was set to high This was happening on all the bowls, some worse than others. Cure was to change the bowls. I will look into repairing the bowls in the future. Test method was to blow and or suck the tube with a finger over the end. So thanks again lads for all the help, just need to find out why the horn and park and tail light has stopped working and I have a lose wire on the right rear indicator to sort out then its off for a MOT as long as the gremlins don't mess her up again overnight.
