Needing some links/help
« on: July 26, 2019, 06:43:16 PM »
Does anyone have any links for known problem areas or known problems for an 81 CB650?

Going to start taking her apart soon and need some extra assistance on what to specifically look for.

Pretty bulletproof and some nice improvements over the 550. Only common fault I’m aware of is the ignition system. The spark units tend to go bad. I’d just recommend OEM parts. Seals, o-rings, chains, gaskets etc. In my build thread’s table of contents (link in description) you might find some useful info. Such as a list of almost all seals, o-rings and gaskets with part numbers. I put that together when I was rebuilding mine.

What are your plans? Why are you taking it apart? Neglected?

Great thanks. Will look into that. Great idea for putting it together when you built yours.

Saw your introduction post. Bike looks to be in good shape. What I’d do is the bare minimum to get it running/riding. No need to open the engine unless you broke a chain, gear, spun a bearing, etc. Even a seized engine you can free up and get it running well without cracking it open.

Dave,

She has been a tad neglected and the seller didn't want to dig into the carbs, so she definitely needs the carbs done and a tune up.
Theirs rust in her tank
She's missing a rear brake switch, forks need to be redone.

So far that is what we know of and can see by looking at her.

Not bad at all. I paid $300 for my 650 engine alone.

Above I said link in description but I meant signature, sorry! Click on my build thread link below and it’ll take you to my table of contents and there are a bunch of 650 stuff I did.

Edit: I see you’re using Tapatalk so you might not see my signature. Here’s the link to the TOC http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,140833.0.html
