Amsterdam pile'o'parts
« on: October 30, 2019, 06:58:46 AM »
Hi there!

I was always a car guy, always a couple of projects on hand. Specialism: wiring up engine swaps. Still have two classic Toyotas in storage, but sold off everything else.
Since a few years, I commuted by motorbike mostly to snake through traffic. Mostly for the independence, while the cars had to queue. After I got knocked off the bike once (a VFR VTEC) and later had a car accident through another mirror-deprived lane-changer (both times I luckily walked away without a scratch), I figured with so many of that kind of drivers on the road, motorbike commuting would end badly sooner or later. So I sold the big fat commuter bike (FJR1300A) and went back into the queue of 4-wheeled tanks with better bad driver protection.

This year I moved to Amsterdam, where my job is. Mostly because I failed to convince my new girlfriend to LEAVE Amsterdam upon moving in with her. That's how life goes, eh? I did get about two mancaves out of that deal though, one for my electronics and amateur radio stuff and the other (a small one-car garage) for car/motorbike stuff. But moving into Amsterdam from the countryside (if there is such a thing in the Netherlands) meant I had to downsize a bit, i.e. get rid of most of my car projects and then some. Meanwhile, it turned out motorcycles are the ideal form of transportation to get around in a big city (free parking anywhere!) and there are not too many lanes to change at high speeds either. So back to bikes it is...

By coincidence (or maybe not?) the current fleet ended up all-Honda:
- '89 CBR400RR (NC23). Status: For sale to a good home, but I also don't mind keeping it if I don't get good offers. I commuted on it for a few months but decided to set it aside before the road salt season.
- '96 CB500 (PC26). Status: Winter beater
And the reason I joined...
- '78 CB550K3 ... although "pile'o'parts" is more accurate, much of which I have yet to identify. They do fit together and form a non-running motorcycle, but for example the engine seems to be a CB500K2 type. Status: Winter project.

Since this post is not about introducing the bikes, I'll conclude with a pic of my Swedes instead.

Obviously the bigger one does not live in Amsterdam but is kept in a marina.

Hi, used to live in Amsterdam. Moved to germany because of my wife...
The cb 550 k3 is a different type of bike than what came on the market in the USA.
If you have any questions... shoot..

Mzzl, Menno.

Mine is a strange collection of random parts anyway, so it would be unlike anything on the market anywhere. Thread here.

But thanks!

I already noticed that while the 500 model guide on this site ends in 1973, in the EU we find CB500 fours up to '76 or so. This might be a thing when identifying my engine, that seems to be a '73 or later CB500 lump.

By the way I guess my situation is kind of the reverse. My significant other is originally German, but moved to Amsterdam and now doesn't want to leave anymore  ;)
