I have been using medium sand in 100lb bags from the Home Despot for about $12 a bag to blast frames, swingarms, centerstands, ect.... Fine sand would be a little better.

Glass beads with 10% Aluminum Oxide mixed in for cutting.  Make sure you totally clean out the grit from threaded holes and bearing surfaces.  Squeaky clean threaded holes or you have problems.  Second choice is plastic media.  That stuff is like really sharp shards of hard plastic flakes with jagged and triangular shapes.  Really aggressive to paint and dirt, won't damage the metal or cause heat.  Works great on engines and aluminum parts and will clean chrome really well without hazing it over.

Be cautious using sand, the silica is hazardous.  I always used aluminum oxide.
