How do you adjust the CB750 '77-'78 idle mixture screws?
« on: July 12, 2012, 09:36:30 AM »
They're hard to reach, especially the #2 and #3.  So far, I'm wearing a thick leather glove (to avoid burning myself on the engine) and trying to manipulate a stubby screwdriver with my gloved fingertips.

Am I missing something here that would make this easier?

Thats a tough one.  struggled with it, too.
get a 3" electric drill bit(standard), put it in a socket (forget the size) on a socket wrench...

I cut about an inch off of a stubby screw driver.  It works well for me. How much adjustment are you making? Stock they should be 1.5 turns out I believe.

I set them at 1.5, but I'm trying to adjust for a k&n airbox filter and 4-1 exhaust. Before going up a size with the idle jet, I'd like to see if I can turn the screws out enough to remove some hesitation and get the bike to start/idle easier.

I just use a slot screwdriver bit that came with my cordless drill, it's maybe 2 1/2 inches at the most in length. Easy to turn with my fingers and short enough to fit in the small confines. Or I've used the mini screwdriver bit and the adaptor bit from my socket set, it's even smaller. I find the stubby is to bulky and the mixture screw is easily turned by the driver bit and fingertips.

I use a screwdiver bit for a drill with a short piece of tubing slid over it to have something to grip.  Works petty good.  I also put marks on the tubing so I can tell how much I've tuned it.

Something like this with a two" bit works also

I made a tool for that.

Turn the gear with the long screw, and the shaft at the other end turns at a 90 degree axis.

I know this is an old post but found it while I was having the same problem, trying to fine tune the adjustments. My wife came to the rescue finding mini screwdrivers at JoAnne’s which is a local craft/fabric store. They are like nubby screwdrivers just way smaller and easier to use than a driver bit. I’ll try and post a pic. If you don’t have a JoAnne’s I’m sure Hobby Lobby or similar store would have them.
