7" Headlight Bucket with Speedometer hole?
« on: June 16, 2018, 08:50:16 PM »
Hey guys,

I'd like some modern lighting on my bike and at the same time would like to place a small 2 1/16 or 2 3/8 speedometer into the headlight bucket.
What's a good bucket to start with, I could do the measurements my self and just bore out the right sized hole. Are there any premade buckets being sold somewhere? I think I would need something with a decent amount of depth for the back of the headlight + the back of the speedo + wires.

All I could find so far was Benjis headlight bucket, and carpys, but it seemed too expensive at $225.

Thanks!

Old English bikes had often a hole for a voltage gauge in the headlight bucket.

I've ordered an Ural/Dnepr headlight bucket, it should fit a 7" LED light + a Speedhut GPS Speedo 3 3/8" just fine. Got lucky and found a headlight bucket on ebay for $45 with shipping. Still cheaper than Benjies $130+ shipping. I did check out some older english bikes and some older BMWs but they were hard to find info on or insanely expensive.

The CB's should have a headlight bucket with voltage gauge. There are many charging threads in the forum. A gauge will show when it work or not.

Look for a Lucas headlight bucket for a triumph Bonneville - pre-1973...maybe even pre-1970.  They have the voltage meter hole.  Not sure you would be able to use it with stock headlight ears.  I believe someone is making a fairly honest repop, so not prohibitively expensive.

CB160, CL160 had speedos in the headlight bucket, nor sure of size, maybe 6", maybe 7"? And I believe the gear ration is the same. CB77 had speedo and tach in one gauge in the bucket too.

Post some pics.  I was looking into the same thing.  E-Bay has repo Ural headlights based on BMW's for about $50 delivered.  Also has a few idiot lights built in.

The early to mid 60's Honda scramblers had that set up. It was a round speedo, I think through CB had an odd shape for the speedo.

Check ebay/Craigslist for CL72  or CL77.

Quick update on this subject.

I bought a Dnepr bucket like stated, bored the hole out a little bigger for a Speedhut speedo, and put in some LEDs for turn signals/highbeam.

Drilled the top of the retainer ring and the bucket for two basic clasps. This works in keeping it closed.
Also drilled a hole in the back of the bucket for all the wiring to exit by the neck of the frame.

Light is a $60 trucklite LED on amazon. It works great, has built in turn signals that are not overpowered by the main light.
