K5 Stalls
« on: October 11, 2020, 11:07:39 AM »
Hoping for some help with a problem. Started the bike and it ran for a few minutes and then stalled. Was unable to kick start, so I jumped it. It will start and run, but the moment the jumper cables are disconnected it stalls. Battery has 12.75 volts, however the oil press and neutral lights do not illuminate. Pressing the elec start causes a buzzing sound. Any ideas?

oil light should only be on when the bike is not running and then go off shortly after starting.  is this new behavior after you did something to the bike?  was it running fine in the past?

Right. The oil light and neutral light are not on when the bike is not running.  No current being delivered from the battery that has 12.75 volts on my multimeter.

I would start by checking your electrical connections to make sure they are clean and tight.  Be sure all grounding points are clean as well.  I would start with your ground connections.  Also, be sure your fuse clips are clean and bright and tight.

It a pain to go through all electrical connections but it is a bigger pain to have electrical problems in the middle of nowhere.

The buzzing is your dead battery barely turning over the starter (spins but not engaging). Your battery is so dead it won’t run the ignition without the booster battery connected. Voltage is not an indication of battery strength. Turn your ignition and headlight on (bike not running). Bet you it dims quickly? A load tester will show your battery is pooched......

Thinking you are right, but why does it die when jumper is disconnected ?

What is the voltage measured directly at the battery terminals when the ignition switch is turned on? Is it still 12.75 volts?
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

probably because when the battery on the bike is under load it's no where near 12.75V.

I think there's something wrong with the battery, because these bikes will actually run and idle with no battery once started!
