Prices for frame and tank painting
« on: April 20, 2020, 07:42:54 AM »
I am sure these costs vary, but I am trying to get an idea what I might expect to pay to have the frame, tank and side covers repainted.  The tank has one small dent but no rust, side covers have minor only minor scratches and I want to change to color from maroon to sunrise orange.  The frame has some rust on the nicks and scratches but otherwise in good shape.  Just want to do factory colors, nothing custom.   I am guessing the frame and all its bits and pieces should be bead blasted before paining. I've got the mechanical things covered but this is my first project and not sure what the painting part might cost.

The cost can vary wildly depending on your location and who you hire.
I usually sand blast old paint then paint with single stage black and catalyst.
I recently painted a frame, my sand blasting shop is closed and I didn't want to go.
I steel wooled the whole frame and sanded a few areas with rust, took some time, it helps to be creative in these times.
You can do the same.
Your best bet is to find a hobbyist in your area willing to paint, the cost will be lower and the results can be as good or even better then a "professional" shop.
Talk to everyone you know with antique bikes and ask about hobbyists and local painters.

For your tank and side covers it is best to sand the old paint off before repainting.
It takes some time but you can do this.
Then have your frame painter do the tank and side covers.

Good advise, thanks.  I will check with others in the area.
On a similar topic, do you have a preference for a rust remover to use for the inside of the tank?  Only surface rust from what I can see and no sludge.  No gas smell either. From the registration decals it looks like the last time the bike was running was in 2004.

On my restorations, I have a guy that blasts the frame and then powder coats it for $100.
Comes out like luscious dark chocolate!

BTW - semi-gloss black.

Tank and side covers can cost up to $600 to done right. Paint is very expensive.

If you are inclined to do some DIY, have a shop media blast the frame and use POR15 yourself. It's pricey but the results are very good.
