Honda CB hardtail frames
« on: April 22, 2020, 05:13:28 PM »
So my hopes were dashed when I set my mind on building a cb 550 frame to find out that no one makes a complete hardtail kit for it. They make plenty for the cb 750. I was hoping to go with the smaller engine because it looks nicer but no luck. I do not want to do any hardtail welding or bolting kits. In fact, I am hoping to swap the wheels and forks from the original bike onto a new frame. Any idea if this is possible and where I might find a good frame for this? Can I use a 750 frame for a 550 or should I give up on that dream. I don't mind fabricating an engine mount but when it comes to the frame integrity, I don't trust my welding skills. I tried this on an old bike I had but I couldn't get rid of the swing arm because I was nervous that my welds might break and I'd be sitting on blacktop at 65+ miles an hour. Please any thoughts on how I can make this happen?

I just found this on CL. It turns over but doesn't run. He wants 1650 for it... Good deal?

 Does it have a title?
If it's what you want, maybe not a bad deal. Those look like Invader rims and those have been going up in value lately. Springer front ends aren't cheap.

But it does need some work. I see oil around the head gasket, but it looks like you can remove the head in the frame. I see some rust, but that's what elbow grease is for.

If it has a title and that's the style you're after, go get it.  It looks like it's been stored reasonably well and you'd never buy all that for $1700.

Pretty cool looking old school vintage 750 chopper. I kind of have a hankering for one of those someday to putt around on.

You're going to have to be able to weld anyways, why not just weld in the tabs needed for a 550 engine?

I been having thought of converting an AMEN rigid to a swingarm rear..
I like the look of the frame and oil tank, but my back needs a bit of suspension.,

How well do the Saviour's work, and do those frames ever come up for sale? Seems a shame to alter yours

I have both right now. Did a lot of miles on a Savior from 78 to 82, it was pretty good,  but not as good as a swingarm. Unfortunately the Savior I have now  had a lot of plate welded in on the rear portion from oil tank to plunger, and was removed badly, tubing is a bit messy.
A swingarm is more tuneable , easy to change things. When I bought my Savior it was a choice between it and the Santee swingarm one.  Also the challenge of mid ring the team sounds appealing to me.. have or create something different.  AND HAVE A custom framed  bike that can do a 800 mile day..

Fair point, presumably with the Savior there aren't many options of suspensions units to go for , and travel is limited too. I sometimes toy with building a chop, though we don't have the roads around here for them, but if I do it'll have to have some kind of rear suspension

If you have a sore back a hardtail is bad news, if you havent you will soon after you start riding it
