750 k5 neutral switch o ring disappeared
« on: May 15, 2020, 10:02:52 PM »
Long story short, .....while installing a new neutral switch, and installing the o ring first, I somehow got the oring
stuffed in the hole too far till I can no longer detect its location.  Its been a while since i've sen the inside of the crankcase. I suspect  the oring is somewhere under the shift drum. Is it possible to remove the shifter components and within limits, get a small view inside the case , or am I totally screwed? REALLY don't want to remove engine
to explore. thanks guys.

Have you fished around with a wire or hook of some sort in that area Since that ball on the switch fits in a detente on the drum it may not have gone that far in hopefully. Good luck. Sometimes the easy stuff can be a real pain in the arse.

On the plus side: I have found pieces of them in the oil filter screen before(!). The gears will grind them up, maybe get a sticky shift or two, before they get that far. Chances are it will end up sitting in the bottom of the oil pan after a while, if it did indeed pop itself up inside.
Chances are, though, that it will just sit there underneath the shifter drum. The oil flow from this cavity moves toward the center of the engine, almost dead-center of the oil pan, and then drops down half an inch to the pan. So, if it migrates, it will end up sitting next to the oil pump's screen in the end. But, it may take quite a while to get there!

Thank you sir.....that was my thought too (leaving it in there) but was afraid of little pieces clogging
up critical passages. I took the shifter apart, saw that there was no view to see anything that way and
figured to tear the lower end apart. This way, I can keep an eye on the oil pump screen periodically.
Thanks HM. I almost lost my enthusiasum for this bike. I'm getting older and not up to handling big
time maintenance any more....A sigh of relief :)
