Repacking 4 into 1 megaphone kerker
« on: June 25, 2020, 03:22:05 PM »
I've never bought a packing kit for any repack jobs starting in the 70s. They've always worked fine using glass insulation by ripping chunks off and cramming it in. Packed this one maybe in november. Was still ok didn't need to repack it so tore it all out anyways. Then decided to Google it. I see the kits are wired before putting the baffle in. Sounds good Still or did. The one I got., the baffle I always have put in from the inlet side. Then I'll pack from the outlet side. I pack it full. And I missing any special details? Before ripping the glass from the garage door I figured I run it by the pros. Thank you.

I bought a kit from my local bike shop.  $7.95 , sheet of fiberglass cloth pre-cut to the right size.  Stainless wire to hold the cloth in place, slid the baffle back in and done.  Never did one before, sounded waaay better!
intrigued by the wail...seduced by the scream.

Cycle Gear sells the material in their stores. I wrapped mine in stainless steel wire from the hardware store.

I took glass wool from my speakers when time for the annual inspection. Copper or steel wire around to keep it in place.

Better now, no more inspections for my CB750's. From 40 years old, veteran.

A huge package for insulate a house will be OK for many.

it's pretty weird inside the kerker, it might be missing something, i always forget to get some images. i use the insulation off the garage door, and always have, but the kits all have a specific size length of wrap, that i see, and it looks kind of like not enough or it'll blow out fairly soon. and it's not the cost, it's that the sound and power takes a dump. i didn't get to check the messages so i just stuffed it full of glass. the whole thing packed, it's got some weight to it. inside of that tube is another short section of smaller solid hollow tube.

i probably did it wrong, but i take the cone off, pull the stuff out, and i pull the tube out and get a couple of wraps that fits close to tight and i wire it until i'm past the bend, so i'll put tube in, and from the solid piece to the cone is a long length of perforated pipe with nothing to back up the insulation to, so i just pack it, the glass in pretty tight, even the cone, so the whole thing works like the wire i guess. the glass is cheap enough, trash find, but is that too much? it runs like the stock muffler being that quiet, and only for the first 5 minutes did it seem to be too much, after that it runs as good as ever, high on the r's easy and pulls good.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-XS650-XS-650-KERKER-2-INTO-1-EXHAUST-MUFFLER-PIPE-CHROME-BALANCE-TUBE/312982044410?hash=item48df2efefa:g:Wj4AAOSwFINeOw4u

this is what mine looks like except mine is 4 into 1. the muffler though, looks like this one. shaped the same.

then i see this https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-KERKER-MAC-Replacement-Baffle-Baffles-Megaphone-Exhaust-Muffler-4-1/221712390821?hash=item339f169aa5:g:JzQAAOxyd8NSbpri (and it's probably why i'm trying to figure out how to pack it, with old insulation or even the purchased precut. my cone buts up to the long perforated tube that starts from the cone and goes in past the bend while it sticks out just past the muffler clamp, there's a solid tube on the upstream side that is a little over 8 to 10 inches and it is up in the first part of the tube (upstream.) the perforated pipe is long. and so i'm wondering if you're supposed to only pack a short section but leaving any of those holes open i'm sure would be pretty loud. does that sound kind of in the ballpark. the pack job would be long. i'm gonna run it for little while and see if it works ok. it kind cut down on the decel popping to almost none. oh yeah that can't go away, plugs are always white
