1976 CB550k keeps stalling.
« on: July 26, 2020, 09:01:55 PM »
Here's a little about the bike. I just bought the bike (not my first) a couple weeks ago and went through the usual; brakes, new spark plugs, coils, wires, Timing, oil. The bike had old inline fuel filters and I had some extras so I replaced them.

Here's the issues, the bike runs pretty well but rich, already fouled the new spark plugs and with about 10min of riding it will die at a stop. Seems to be charging the battery ok. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance guys.

What airfilter? Are you sure air intake at the airbox is unobstructed? No forgotten cloth lying around that can impede air flow? CB500/550s are very sensitive to the right size fuellines. The correct dimensions are for: the CB500 and CB550Ks with oldstyle carbs: 18 and 30 cm length for the models with the bowltype petcock and 17 and 28 cm for models that have the newer style petcock. You probably have the latter. Do not be tempted to have them even one cm longer. For the tube that supplies carbs 3+4 use the soft metal clamp in the middle front side for routing. Ideal inside ⌀ 5,5 mm. Outside ⌀ will be around 9-11mm. Personally I'd abstain from inline fuel filters. On a CB500/550 they often cause irregularities. The petcock filter is sufficient.

I have not rebuilt the carbs yet. Unfortunately I'm running air pods that came with the bike. I've tried taking the air pods off to see if that's the problem but no change, still runs rich and still dies. You're right I'll ditch the inline files and put the correct fuel lines on. I've also tried adjusting the idle set screw to increase the rpm so it won't die at stops but then the bike develops a bad hanging rpm. Thanks guys

You guys think it's fuel delivery?

You need to strip and check the carbs, its a distinct possibility that whoever fitted the pods did not understand and over jetted the carbs
