Please help with a CB350K4 helmet hook
« on: February 15, 2007, 10:58:18 AM »
Some PO removed the helmet hook. Before I took the frame to the painter, Greg (ohiocaferacers) sent me a picture of the hook of one of his frames. I gave the picture to the painter -they are also "fabricators" so he can make a new hook, but it seems he couldn't get a correct impression of the scale and made one so big that the seat couldn't even be closed into position. I just cut it and planned to live without it, but then I found the painter forgot to close some holes the PO drilled in the frame, and as I have to go there to take my Sanglas bike parts for paint, I'm going to take the CB350 frame again in order to have the hook re-made. I know it's not a big deal, but as the frame is bare now, I know it's now or never.

If you could do me a favour and measure in your helmet hooks the dimensions attached I would greatly appreciate.

Regards

Raul

this is from memory because i'm at school... the part that is attached to the frame is a little more than an inch long, it protrudes from the frame only about a half inch and the "hook" part (the part that points upward is about 3/4" to an inch)

the material is also soft enough that i can bend it if i wanted to... that would be helpful for seat fitment.

I appreciate your help heffay, but I prefer if you can get your measuring tape and give me exact figures...  ;D

BTW I'm talking about the CB350 twin, not the four.

Will the 1973 CB350G twin work? I've got an all original in my collection that I'll give measurements on this evening. I'll use calipers though - not a measuring tape.... :)

Thanks a lot Gordon. I think both bikes had the same frame but I can't tell for sure. In fact there was a lot of differences between them.

Raul, I can take a pick of the frame and tab so you can compare. I would be very surprised that Honda would change anything so close to it's last year of twin production.  a K4 is 1972?

Yes, K4 is 1972. Seat pan and opening -back vx left side- evolved during the CB350 production. Common sense say they should be similar, but the last thing I want is to weld another hook just to discover the seat won't close again. One thing is true though? This time I'll make sure to use a softer rod so it can be bent into place.

I doubt I will ever use the helmet hook, but you know, there is only one way to make a perfect restoration...

Gordon, I'm glad to tell you you have been awarded a "nice guy" prize....  ;D unfortunately the only reward will be your inner satisfaction of having helped a complete stranger from far away. I'll pay it forward...

can you do me a last favour? I'm pretty sure that those two holes behind the right shock mount are not original. Can you tell me wether the other two under the remains of the helmet hook are original too? I guess they are because there is no rust - a drill would have eliminated the paint- but I can't tell what are they for.

Thanks in advance

Raul

Ok, this cinches the award....

Raul, I hate to bare bad news, but someone has been playing with their father's drill. Those holes aren't on mine. I noticed the rear turn signals on yours had diffferent mounts, so I took a photo of how they should go on.

Hope this is of help to you.

Regards,
Gordon

Now is when I get confused. I have been collecting pictures of CB350 from the Internet, to serve as guide when the reassembly time comes. I've been looking through them and have found one with the two holes below the helmet hook.

I'm positive that the blinkers are right because they match the diagram of the parts book, but still those holes are a mystery...

You know, I will have to sell or pawn that award just to pay for your medication. You are correct though that there are appearantly significant differences in the standard K and the 350G model. I really thought for 34 years now that the only differences were the obvious 1-year only disc, the idiot light panel, side cover badge colors, and paint. There is a lot of things I see on this G which are unique.

Don't fret - I've found you a website and you are correct - those holes do come standard and no extra charge -. It is an alternative seat latch which doesn't lock. Gordon

Here is a link to the various models -

That makes complete sense, those two holes for the non-locking seat latch. The two holes behind the shock mount are not standard, that's for sure.

So, once the dimensions of the hook are known, I will ask the painter to cover those two non-standard holes and will leave the latch holes unmolested. They are out of sight anyway.

Thanks again gordon, you have very well deserved the award!   ;)

Raul, did you miss my earlier posting of your hook dimensions?

A = .238"
B = 1.198"
C = 1.634"
D = .783"

Surely those are the same.

Gordon

Of course I didn't miss them, but probably I didn't express myself well. I wanted to say: "as the dimensions are known now, I will ask the painter to make a new hook and cover the non-standard holes only".

Those rear indicators on Rauls are UK/European type and the mountings are simiolar to the 500 four. Note the lack of grabar so that the "passenger" has to hold the rider real tight---sometimes nice sometimes not!
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!
