It probably isn't but it always seems a pain to get the old screw out. This is the screw that holds the speedo cable into the front wheel.

I've done a few of these now and for me the easiest method without damaging the speedo drive is as follow:

1. Remove speedo drive from wheel.
2. Soak the stuck screw part in WD40 for an hour.
3. Then apply  some heat for 30 seconds or so around the stuck screw.
4. Drill into the centre of the screw using a 7/64" regular drill bit, best done using a drill press and some cutting oil.
5. Remove from drill press and hammer in  (gently) a No2 screw extractor into the top of the screw. I had a cheap screw extractor set from Canadian Tire but they do the trick.
6. Grip the screw extractor with some mole grips and screw out the screw.

My local vintage motorcycle store has a whole box of these speedo drives all with the screw stuck in them.

I know this isn't rocket science but it may help a newbie.

Do you have something against left hand drills?

I hate the disc brake adjuster screw more, I just remove them and leave them out.

Yes that screw is a pain in the arse ! I had to do the dimple in the edge and loosen it with a small sharp chisel and a hammer once to get it out. Has to come out if you want your front tire off unless you cheat and take it off at the speedo gauge.

I’ve nothing against left handed drill bits in theory and have had success with them in the past. However my drill press doesn’t do reverse. Also the one useful size LH drill bit in my set broke rendering the set not very useful. Plus regular drill bits are more easily available and a bit cheaper.

This reminds me of something I've been curious about for sometime. You think it'd be possible to remove bolts like this with a left hand thread tap and a left hand thread high grade bolt? Just drill it, tap it, and torque it out?

I've been wondering the same but hadn't researched it yet, are LH taps and bolts out there?
