Hey, knowledgable people.

So I f'ed up. I've had the carbs off twice to clean them. This last time I think I had them right (albeit unbalanced). But in a rush of bad decision-making, I took the bike for a ride around the block with a rusty gastank, assuming that the in-line fuel filter could catch any awful rust.

The bike ran great for the first 3 blocks, but got worse and worse. Now it only runs on choke.

I probably did this to myself. I am my own worst enemy.

My question: for specific cases just like this, is there some trick to removing this rust without removing the carbs completely?

The alternative is to pay someone $400 to do it for me, which I'd prefer to avoid. I just can't do this carb job again without losing my hair.

I’m not familiar with the other bikes, but on a cb500k you can take the float bowls off and access the jets with the carbs on the bike.  You need a perfectly sized short screwdriver and some patience.  I’ve had the bowls off, jets cleaned, and everything back together in an hour or so.

You need to clean tank.
Clean float bowls and fuel valve cup.

clean the tank, take the carbs off and blow them all out with compressed air.  blow the fuel line(s) out.  get rid of the inline filter.  replace the filter in the tank if it's bad.  you should be buttoned up in a couple hours not including cleaning the tank.  probably had my carbs off and on 8 or 10 times before they were "right".  even years from then i may take them off this winter to make some adjustments to jet size as i feel i've been running rich.

Be great if it was just your aftermarket added on fuel filter plugged and the bike was starving for fuel, might be worth checking. What bike do you have ?

It's a 1980 cb650c, and getting that f'ing airbox and carb back in position without leaks is a crazy-maker I don't know if I can handle again.

I am already working on POR15-ing the tank tonight.

If it was just fuel-starved that would be amazing. Yes, I'll check that. But it was running with full choke, so it seems unlikely.

I feel your pain, my 900C carbs and airbox are a nightmare.  As already suggested, ditch inline filters, clean your tank and hope for the best.

Two more points:

- Do you have sediment bowl on your petcock?  If yes, clean it too.  Also sediment bowl is the only filter you need.
- Do you have vacuum operated fuel valve, aka the spawn of satan?  ;D  My 900 would not run right till I got rid of it, actually it left me stranded once, that thing is very temperamental.
