I saw in Terry,s pic, in the background., the ice coolers with Ice for 8. 00.
Just how much is that say in U.S. dollars., or Canadian.,
We pretty much pay 3,×× Canadian..l I think in the PNW  of the US , it's around that price..
How much are you guys paying ? I prefer blocks but not always being stocked..

They’re 2 for $8AUD, which is around $5.70USD or $7.60CAD.

There was a Simpsons episode explaining why it’s so expensive

My son was an "Ice Man" for a couple of years. Definitely had to work on the weekends and holidays as that was peak time to keep the coolers full. He said it was a good way to meet chicks. It just so happens his wife is one of those "chicks" that he put the charm on in a little hick town gas station/party store.  ;D ;D

I'm not sure what amount you're talking about for that price, but on the rare occasion that I do need a large amount of ice it's been around $0.10/lb.  It's more than twice that from a convenience store, but we have a couple of these really cool, fully automated ice-dispensing buildings in the area.  It's basically a giant vending machine for ice.

+1...Twice the Ice...$2 for 20 lbs.  Cheap.

My refrigerator makes plenty of ice as long as I dont make more than 4 pitchers of Margaritas in a night!

I worked for a local liquor store in Austin about 20 years ago.  One of my jobs was delivering ice to parties.  My wife and I were already dating then, but if we weren't it definitely would have been a good way to get some numbers.

That's the one!  Although here it's called "Plano Ice".  I'm guessing it's a franchise or kit-style business, because the one I use looks exactly like that.  I love the option of bag or loose.  The only time I need bulk ice is when I have a big cooler in the car, so having it dump directly into that is awesome.

we used to have similar buildings in australia up thru the 70s, all gone now, just buy it from supermarket/bottleshops/convenience stores

the main reason i remember is that when we came out from england in 73 i was amazed by these places, in england you sure as hell didn't need to buy ice for parties or any other reason generally. in fact up until the mid 80s there weren't even drinks fridges in shops or take away booze shops, everything just lived on shelves, soft drinks, beer, wine etc

now that global warming has finally gotten to the UK i'm guessing they might actually have caught onto the concept of retail refridgeration. it hit over 35'C the other day, they must have near well sh1t themselves
i blame Terry

During World War II military camps were established here on the Gold Coast (Australia) near Miami, Burleigh Heads and at Kirra.

At the end of the war many of these army buildings were left abandoned and, with good quality building materials in short supply, the local community were quick to see the value of the timber and fibro structures left behind by the army.

After the end of World War II two recycled army huts were used for the construction of the Miami Ice works which opened in 1947 on Kratzmann Avenue in Miami near North Burleigh Beach.

At the time of construction, Miami had few commercial premises with the 1949 Post Office directory (no google back then!) mentioning the ice works, two motor garages, one storekeeper and the Miami Hotel in the immediate area.

The signage along the length of the Gold Coast Highway became well known and the Miami Ice building with its mural of a sun wearing sunglasses, known as Mr Sunny, was a popular site for photographers.

In 1988 John Farnham used the ice works as a backdrop to the music video for his song ‘Two Strong Hearts’.

After many decades of ownership, in 2013 the Grevis family sold the property. Despite a number of campaigns to preserve the building, the machinery was removed and the buildings were demolished in November 2013.

Here’s a photo of it then ...

And now ...

It’s now the site of a luxury apartment building and, in good taste, they’ve kept the name, Mr Sunny as the apartment logo and have some of the old machinery on display.

I, and many others, still use it as a landmark when giving directions.
