Rust Removal Exhaust / High heat paint
« on: September 04, 2020, 02:12:31 PM »
I have a Carpy Yosh Style Exhaust on my CB 550 and it was never painted. It now has rust and I would like to remove the rust and rattle can it with high heat paint. I don't have the coin to get it professionally done at the moment.

Does anyone have any recommendations for removing the rust and paint recommendations ?

Apologies in advance if this has been asked/answered.

I've used the aluminum colored vht "flame proof" on my header pipe clamps. They have held up pretty well. The color looks very similar to a clean sohc motor. Can probably get it in black. Evapo-rust or metal rescue I guess would work. Check with someone who's used it. I've had good luck with kerosene. Takes a while.

I have done this a few times.  Barbecue paint, then I found if you clear coat (2 coats) on top, it will not wear off as fast.  I seems the rain takes off the barbecue paint.
then it has to be redone every year.
I have a place nearby that does powder coat quite cheap.  I wish it would have tried that now, but i didn't.

I wasn't sure of whether to go with black or the aluminum color. Thanks for the suggestion! That metal rescue is exactly what I was looking for.

After you took care of the rust, did you just spray the pipes or do you need to sand it? I will try the clear coat method to make it last longer.

man ive used the vht black with all the prep and special primer etc,it lasted a few months till the black dropped off like a jigsaw puzzle showing the white primer underneath, now for years ive used pot belly black heat paint over bare steel and its perfect and about half the cost!ive even just turpentine cleaned old pipes in situ and the stuff holds on,the brand here is white knight probably aussie only?

you also need to cure the paint by heating it in steps.  run the bike till the pipes get warm, then a little longer each time til you get them as hot as they will get.  at least that's my understanding of how to do it right.

The VHT paint works fine if you cure it properly. I usually try to paint the exhaust as soon as I can in a project and let it dry a long time, then install it last so it doesn't get scratched. Then I do the heat cure when the bike is running. The 75' 400-Four exhaust was done in 18' and it still looks great. You have to cure it properly or it will fail.
