Robin engine R&R or swap?
« on: September 10, 2020, 01:37:26 PM »
My buddy that builds race cars, sometimes with me, locked up the Robin engine in his EZ go golf cart. It's the 295 and ran out of oil. He miscalculated the oil use rate. It's used for towing his sons jr. dragster.
Has anyone swapped an EZ go to the vanguard or other engine? I suggested a hondamatic but he laughed.

Don....... my grandchildren wore out my old EZEGO, a few years ago. We use it around the farm, but most importantly, it is our pit cart, for endurance racing the Toyota MR2.

I picked up an old YAMAHA two stroke cart and truthfully, MUCH NICER CART. The entire body work tilts back, for easy access and mechanically a much better design. Tell your buddy it’s time to shop!

I'd think so too, he hasn't owned it very long and recently fitted it with lights and seat belts for in town driving. Buuuut,,, that what happens when you don't check oil.
Some of the engine conversions don't shut off and re start like most golf carts do, so they idle a lot. I'd pull the Robin engine apart and at least take a look at what parts are seized.

I have worked on a couple beat on EZ Go's.  The little twins are a fairly primitive (by Japanaese standards anyway) motor but seemed extremely well built.  The ones I worked on were low on compression and smoked like a chief but ran and operated just fine. I bet all he would have to do is replace what seized and it would continue happily burning oil.
If it works good, it looks good...

I'll nag him to take it apart. He borrowed my Club Car for the next two weekends. It's got the Kawasaki motor. I checked the oil, L0L!

He got the little frozen Robin loose and drove it around for a while. Now it's really locked up.
