Brake Shoes question - CB400F
« on: November 12, 2020, 05:54:47 AM »

My CB400F flunked its state inspection because the brake shoes (rear drum) are too worn.

Braking seems to be of some value, so are there any brands of shoes that are better than others?

Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

I’ve used original Honda, Versha (SIC?] and other aftermarket too. Truthfully, on the rear, for street use, I think it’s whatever you find available and meets your budget. A new set will last longer than the bike......

What state are you in?
I lived in Virginia for a while and my 400/4 was exempt from inspections because it was registered as a vintage vehicle.
I like the Vesrah brake shoes and pads.

I am in New Hampshire.  I could register as an antique but with those plates one is supposed to use the vehicle only to go to and from antique vehicle events.

I flunked inspection in June.  The guy who inspected (I have known him for 30 years) pointed out that the police rarely notice the tiny inspection sticker, and are unlikely to pull over a geezer riding a 45 year old Honda, so maybe I should wait until Fall to fix the faults (including very old tires).  That worked out nicely.

I have seen some posts on this forum suggesting that Vesrah disk brake pads are not so good - not sure if that translates to the drum in back.

I have used Vesrah brake pads and shoes andvhave never had a problem with them.

Good tires and brakes are important ;-)

I would get the vintage plates if I were you. No more yearly road tax or inspection fees.
Now  that they are allowing people to loot stores and then set them on fire, the cops probably don't care about you riding your motorcycle on a weekday.

My CB750 K2 has original Vesrah shoes rear, I think marked Honda too.
They followed the part they sit on.
Really good brake, maybe old good asbestos?
Cheap aftermarket can work a litttle, little more and suddenly locked wheel.

Genuine Honda are great. Last time I needed some I searched for the part number & found them at a really good price at a garden equipment place, apparently the same shoes are used on certain Honda quads & other machinery
