LOUD chatter from clutch - HELP!
« on: April 05, 2021, 07:51:39 PM »
Howdy all.

After 10 months of steady work, the CB70K5 basket case fired right up today.  The bad news is that the clutch is making a LOT of LOUD rattling noise unless the clutch lever is pulled in. It gets much worse at low RPMs. The clutch is a new Barnett with Barnett springs. I soaked the plates in oil overnight before installing.  The cone washer was installed with the high center facing out.  The spanner nut was installed with the cone facing inward.

I noticed the tabs on the friction plates don't fit tight in the clutch basket.  They are 13.3 mm wide, and they have about 1mm of slop.  The tabs on the original friction plates are about 0.5 mm wider.

I also took a close look at the Honda parts manual, and if I'm looking at it right, there is supposed to be a 25 mm thrust washer between the clutch and the main shaft (part 18 in the shaft diagram). There is also a splined washer that goes between the clutch basket and the main shaft (part 10 in the other picture)

Are there really two washers between the clutch and the main shaft or am I looking at it wrong?

Would the slop in the friction plates cause that much chatter?

Have you done a proper carb sync yet?

If the noise goes away with the clutch pulled in, it’s definitely in the clutch. Are you sure you have everything in the right order? The metal plates have to go in the proper orientation, they have a rounded and straight cut side.

Not yet.  I didn't want to run it too long with it making so much noise.  Would carbs cause the clutch to chatter?

I didn't realize this. Does it matter which way the rounded edge faces as long as they all face the same direction?
