carb problem
« on: June 11, 2005, 11:28:38 PM »
OK, so now I'm running out of ideas. I bought my F1 last year as a basket case, but most of the frame and fittings had been sorted and the engine was complete, so I thought it was just going to be a case of bolting it all together. First thing I find is that I have an F2 engine - no problem I thought, bit more grunt. After much effort, finally got most things together and then try to start her. No matter what I tried, it had a massive bogging down problem, would tickover OK, but as soon as the throttle was opened, it would almost die. On full choke, I could just about get the revs up, but that was all.

Spent some time playing with timing and checking everything, then I found the carbs were off the original F1 engine - Ahah, I thought, there's me problem. I rummage around in the boxes of spares I got with the bike and find a set of F2 carbs, so £50 later on a set of Keyster kits, I mange to get the carbs fitted and the engine fired up. Guess what - no difference what so ever.

Now the only thing I am doing non standard is I am runniing it with no air filter box. I know that should mean going up a jet size, but the question is, does it make that much differnce? Does taking the airbox off make it completely unridable?

Any suggestions very welcome. By the way, I've got Boyer electronic ignition, so I don't think that's my problem.

The F2 carbs are supposed to have accelerator pumps on them.  At least, the US models do.  Is that working?

What color are your spark plug deposits on the center insulator?

Any idea what the compression numbers are for each cylinder?

You'll need to re-jet the carbies. With no air box (or pods) you'll be sucking heaps of air & not much fuel. Performance sorta like riding an extremely heavy Lambretta.

One carb has the accelerator pumo and that seems to be working OK. I can understand it giving a flat spot if that was faulty, but this refuses to run above tickover.
I've just pulled the main jet out of number 1 carb - it's a 105 that came in the Keyster kit. looking at the jets I took out, they were 125's. I think we are onto something!
I'll try the 125's back in again and see what differnece that makes.

Anyone know what the recommended main jets are for the F2 with and without air filters?
