Carb boot rubber treatment
« on: April 23, 2021, 12:56:47 PM »
Working on my 73 CB750, and have a couple questions about the carb boots.  To be clear, I'm talking about the rubbers that connect the carbs to the airbox.  I've replaced them at least once before, and the same problem occurs over time, they get rock hard.  Not looking for a resto trick, I've seen and tried some of those with mixed results.  I've already ordered new and I'm wondering if I can do something to protect the new parts.  Is there something to condition new rubber that I should apply before assembling?

My other question, is there a sealant I should use at the connection from the boot to the airbox?  I seem to recall there being residue of red silicone or similar product the first time I took it off, wasn't sure what to put on there if anything.

There was never any type of sealant from the factory on rubber boots to air box so someone did that in the past. Keep an eye on those new rubber manifolds if they are aftermarket Chinese rubber. There have been mixed results with those as far as durability etc..  Heat guns work wonders on old hard rubber for taking off or mounting carbs. Tighten clamps while rubber is warmed up also.

I also have always had the impression that the boots were originally glued into the air chamber (or at least on the smaller 4's - I have no experience with 750's) ?
