Cb550 2nd gear whine
« on: April 24, 2021, 11:48:04 AM »
Hi there,
A friend has just bought a 1976 CB550 and there is a distinct whine when in second gear but only second, the others are ok. It makes little difference wether it’s under load or not. Is it likely to be a bearing or the actual gear?

Could be either, there is no "common" problem with 550 boxes
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

My 550 never had a gearbox whine but a certain classic Honda dealer that stocks lots of spares who sold him the bike said they all do that and not to worry about it!
