CB400F Air mixture screw
« on: May 04, 2021, 05:53:00 AM »
Hi I not sure about where to post everything thing yet but I would think most owners look at this page. I have just done a part rebuild of the carbs and was going to change the air mixture screw as it was in the kit, but the screw on my carbs looks to be plastic with a lug on it only allowing the screw to go one full turn and reading on other posts it gives a standard setting of 2 and a half turns out. I did mess with the screws a bit, but being as they only go 1 turn is there a set point for them, I had to balance the carbs with a set of vacuum gages I bought 20yrs ago when I got the bike running but the carbs were way out of sync and the air screw threw me a bit pic included of the air mix screw.

That little black cap pops off.
You can turn the screw until it bottoms out and then back it out. I have found that 1.5 to 1.75 turns is a good range.
If you dont want to put the caps back on I will happily take them off your hands for a bike I am restoring.

It's good to know the carbs haven't been tampered with in it's 44 years of life then.

I'm in the process of giving this CB400f a sympathetic restoration this is a pic I took when I'd just wrestled the engine back in the frame, good luck with your resto.

Thanks for the luck, I'll need it.
The bike I am restoring has 171  original miles but it's in rough shape.
I'll take my time and go through it meticulously.
I have a few of them so comparitive analysis will be my best friend ;-)

If the black caps pop off and are just a cover with a slot in, turning the caps won't alter anything then your saying.

No, the caps fit over the air screw tightly, so when you turn the cap the screw will turn too. The cap is there to restrict how much you can adjust it.
If you pop the caps off (and send them to me ;-)) then you can turn the screw all the way in or out.

The tank turned out beautiful! I'm also looking for a Candy Anteres Red Left side cover for my US spec F2. The US spec C.A. Red is rare so the left side cover is hard to find over here.

This is what mine looked like before it went to the painters.

What year is your frame?
I'm guessing it's 1977 or you wouldn't have changed colors.
Looks like the bodywork was perfect already.

Your painter did a great job!
It's hard to find a good painter here in the USA.

It was black originally and yes it's a 1977 CB400f don't be fooled by the paint you could see sanding marks under the paint, the paint was curling up and lifting off around the filler cap, they hadn't masked off the filler cap and got paint in the tank and that too was curling and lifting in the tank, had to give it a good rinse out with paint thinners and I think it was painted with rattle cans for the finish it had. My painter does it as a side line and hobby in his garage, needless to say he gets very busy, I bought the correct paint, he lays it on.
