1978 CB750K float height
« on: May 28, 2021, 04:22:38 AM »
I have gone through the carbs on my bike and installed 105 main jets.   It starts right up and settles into a nice idle with out the choke, but still idles rich with little response to the air/fuel mixture screws.   They are set at 1.5 turns out on all 4 carbs.   The rubber intakes were new last fall.    It runs way better since installing the 105 main jets(reducing from the 110's) when driving it but you can smell exhaust fumes when driving behind it.    The air filter was new last fall and remains clean.   There is black smoke at idle.

I went back in and checked the float heights since I had not paid much attention to this adjustment during the cleaning process.  Carbs 1,3 and 4 were at 17 mm and higher.   Only Carb #2 was close to 14.5 mm.   I reset all of the float heights to 14.5 mm and they look nice and parallel to the carb housing.

I'm confused about the previous float heights, shouldn't the 17mm height and slightly higher have caused a lean condition?   Thanks for the input.

Why would above spec float height cause a lean condition? Too much fuel = rich, too much air or not enough fuel = lean.

I'll defer to more experienced opinions, glad you sorted that issue.
