Any betting men?
« on: July 02, 2021, 02:54:58 PM »
I drug home a 76F titled but mostly parts missing roller. The former owner claims it's the one he sold the more recent PO with a 900 kit in it. I would normally take that with a grain of salt except I already bought a NIB Henry Abe 900 kit and a low mile 78F engine from that guy. He told me everything it takes to build a 900.
This one appears totally unmolested to me, 15K on the odometer and the valve pockets are clean.
Any bets?  Stock or 900? I'm still thinking stock but there's a slim possibility they didn't mess up screw heads on the rocker cover. It doesn't want to kick easily, it already had the engine bolts removed so I couldn't rock it. The most recent PO took apart every bike he ever owned (4) and then always sold the pile to my brother.
  Stand back, I'm going in.

Sorry,  I got dragged out of the shop for my granddaughter's softball game. They won at least.

Just get a light and check thru sparkplug hole. Use dial idicator on valve spring to check for a cam.
Check and RECORD valve clearance before opening it up..

There are no marks on the cam. Oddly, most guys around here that did a big bore kit didn't do a cam. I took the side covers off and got it to turn enough to get the cam bolts out, but then food, swimming, family, friends and beer got in the way.
Some screws have raised edges so maybe it's been apart. It came to me the engine wasn't bolted in, maybe  it's not the engine the PO mentioned. We will know tomorrow.  I'm not confident on F engine numbers.

Edit it's CB750E- 2385499 correct for a July 75 F frame, I believe. It must be the original motor. If it's not a big bore motor the bike will be assembled loosely and put up for sale. The title is 76 IIRC.

Those who bet stock were correct.  Like almost every other big bore 750 I ever bought, 60.6mm with the head gasket still on.

This has a beautiful cam and rockers, the nickel washers may have had some goop on them but the bore is as stock AF. Slight rust in two cylinders, this morning I removed the starter gear and it spun freely, I think something there was jammed up, the pin came off with the side cover and didn't want to go back in. I'm going to clean it up and have assess what it has going for it. Maybe just re-assemble it  as is for the next guy.
There is another engine from the same guy in my brothers storage unit, we're going there next week. maybe it's the 900, who knows?

Old Henry Abe 900cc (67.5mm bores) or 890cc (67.0 mm) with no pockets for hotter cams?

Jerry RXman/ APE ended up with my H.A. 900 kit.  I traded it for a backcut trans.
I cleaned these cylinders, they will need a good hone, or a first overbore. I'll attach a nice set of low mile cylinders with a broken fin with the motor so the next owner can decide for himself whether to bore or swap liners.  The remaining F parts are in the storage unit. When I get enough of them to assemble a full bike I'll list it for sale. Title and everything.  15,000 miles

Don, I got one piston from the kit to replace the damaged one. Big Jay probably has the remnants of the kit. I have 3 good ones again. My take is the crank oil passages were blocked somewhat after the second occurrence on the same cylinder. Ditched the crank and got a 915 and crank from Kenny. It is finally running good like a scalded ass monkey.

Your engine numbers point to a somewhat early 76. They started the first week or so of May 75.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Dang Jerry, that was a lot of effort for what should have been a sweet motor right off the bat. Glad to hear you made it work after all. I'm a big fan of the F's but I have to choose and other bikes are ahead of this one on the list.
I would have been pleased to rob a big bore motor from it.
