What shocks are you using? CB750
« on: October 21, 2021, 01:07:27 AM »
G’day

Koni’s have packed it in and I don’t think I’ll get warranty so it’s time to buy some shocks for my K2.

I’ve bought a couple of pairs from Icon for different bikes and was happy, but I thought I’d ask what other people were using and check those ones out too.

Thanks for your time.

Ikons and Hagons are good choices if you can swing the expense. I would lean towards adjustable and rebuildable Ikons given the choice.

you may be able to restore your konis with new internals from ikon.
the one on your pic looks like a newer type koni, with the steel body (older ones were alu) for which you may be able to get fitting parts with a bit of luck. i've done this type of refresh and it worked out great, although not everyone will find it worth the effort and expense.
the easier way is definitely a full replacement.

I went on the Icon website and was just about to buy the aluminium body ones cause I like the look of them.  They are just under $800 delivered so a little pricey, but they will last a long time.

I decided to phone them for a chat before I made the decision and Linda from Icon mentioned that my Koni's may be servicable as mentioned by Flatlander.

Mate the seals, rubber mounts, rubber bump stops and oil including delivery is around $175.  I've ordered those parts and will be having a go at rebuilding a set of shocks for the first time.

Those parts are all in stock and the shocks I was going to buy have about a 3 month wait after ordering and payment.

I looked them up with the forum search function, they seemed very high end, most likely rebuildable.
Someone will have more input soon.

I’m using progressive fromt and rear suspension. Ive only ridden 1400 miles since my rebuild and unfortunately the season is basically over (Vermont weather) and I like the rear suspension! I never rode two up and im 150lbs and never scraped on lowest setting (i have a cut and welded hoop cafe style).

I also have a brand new pair in the box but missing the plastic collars for sale. (Im not sure if progressive suspension would mail you the plastic collars that hold the spring in position at no charge aside from mailimg charge).

im using a new set of EMGO 14" shocks with my 2" extended swing armies not bad but i dont expect to get too much out of them, they feel better when im riding with extra weight. Im either getting the ohlins without the gas chambers that cognito moto sells, or some YSS shocks off of Ebay.

Parts turned up today and I've already made a couple of mistakes dismantling the first shock.  I will photograph on the next shock which may save someone being as silly as me.

Although I have created more work than I wanted and damaged the rebound adjuster I think it will be alright.

The total for parts and shipping was $140.

I looked at the link after I had made my mistakes.

It's a slightly different shock and comes apart differently so it may not have helped in this exact situation.

My shocks are from 1996. At least I think that's what Icon told me, going by the batch # stamped on them this seems right.

I chose a set of Ikon 1296 shocks in chrome with the spring shield.  This makes them look original.

I am pleased with how well the bike handles, significant improvement over original and rebuilt classic Koni's I had on it.

Photos just because its pretty.

I'm running the Progressive shocks in the rear as well and once they are setup correctly to your weight they are an excellent bang for your buck. I'm running these with Race Tech emulators in the front and it handles with the best of them around around the canyon roads. Night and day difference!

I've been using the Stock DOHC shocks and/or the Sandcast repro shocks from Z1 parts on the 836. That said, I ride like an old man. Because I am one, and almost always did.
Except the time I hill climbed with a full dress Vetter K3 750, or when I jumped over two lanes on the K2 cb500. Or went 105 mph on a sandcast that was 50 years old.  Other than that, I don't notice my shocks as much as my forks.

No good news with the rebuild.

I got the first shock back together how I think it goes and put the 85ml of oil I was told to use, but I can't bleed the air out.  So when I push the shock down it goes almost all the way down before there is any resistance.  This is how it felt before I pulled it apart also.

When I get a chance I will pull the other shock apart without making the mistakes I made on the first one and see how that goes.

I could probably ring them and ask how I go about bleeding the air out.

It's very possible that I stuffed something up with this first one because I drilled out a rivet trying to get it apart which I shouldn't have and I can't be 100% sure the way I put it back together is spot on.
