Float height - '75 CB550F Super Sport
« on: December 29, 2021, 04:14:01 PM »
Got the carbs back in on the '75 CB550F Super Sport and one carb was flooding.  Using the float bowl drain adapters that kerryb made for me I found that 3 of the carbs fuel level was below the bowl-to-carb level by about 5mm but the one flooding carb was at that level and coming out the overflow.  When I took the carbs off and rechecked the float level all the floats were at around 25mm except for the one that was flooding, which as at 22.  The manual states 22 but I'm wondering if anyone has found that it should be set differently?  Thanks!

With the stock internal parts, 22 mm is correct.  With aftermarket internal  all parts,  you need to compensate for the non-stock dimensions and out of tolerance configuration of the what they gave you in the kits.  The stock spring pins on the float valves were rather soft but consistent.  Aftermarket spring pins didn’t seem to have any acceptance tolerances but were usually much stiffer.  This makes the stock float valve spec irrelevant for aftermarket arb kits.

Beware, the rest of the brass parts in kits have similar dimension and tolerance concerns.  So, don’t be surprised if it runs poorly, as well.

If you saved the stock internals, clean them and put them back in the carbs.

The carb kit was theoretically an OEM Honda kit from Common Motor Collective so hopefully everything was in spec.  I'll put an original back in one carb and see if it gives a different level.
Do you know what the fuel height is supposed to be in relation to the carb body & float bowl?  A lot of my manuals say "5mm" or something like that...
Thanks!

It should 2-3 mm below the bowl gasket line.
All the stock parameters apply to a bike with stock induction and exhaust components.  The stock parameters are not ideal when changes are made to induction and exhaust.

Im one for using the factory brass as much as you can,so long as it aint been gouged poked hard or drilled or corroded heavily, the stock brass is truely precision compared to the aftermarket stuff, that being said if your one mm plus or minus on the float height it really wont matter, its like a washing machine inside the fuel bowls once your riding, imagine long hard sweepers left or right, the fuel is all up one side of the bowl, rough ground and hard braking its all over the place, dirt bikes handle the worst of it with motors pulling strong, dont over think the float level.

Unless Common Motor Collective said it was OEM Honda it likely was not...
You have to learn to read the description carefully so you know whether or not it is an Honda OEM sold product. If it is, then oftenif you are buying enough to cover shipping costs, if they matter to you, then buying from a discount Honda dealership like South Sound Honda of Olympia WA is going to be cheaper.
