I did see one aftermarket triple that does not clamp down on the outside of the triple but on the inside. it has a piece that once the bolt starts to screw in the piece presses up against the fork tube snugging it up.
wouldnt know how to do that though! LOL! but a machinist would.

The early CB350 twins(K0-K3) have that style;their top triples fit real tight over the turned-down fork tube tops and then the fork top bolt holds it all down.
Honda changed the style to pinch bolts starting with the CB350K4 twin.

got the frame parts cleaned off and painted. went with rustoleon satin finish. going to work on the frame, sanding it to scuff of what is on there for the paint to stick on better.

as I was taking it apart it was definitely reminding me of each time I took apart the frankenstein and brown betty 550 motors.
I was glad to see alot of it was similar in ways and also cool the see the small differences

I forgot to take a pic but will take one the next time I am down in the dungeon working on the motor but as I took the rocker cover off there it be but clear silicone along the gasket and in the cover. removed the cam and chain and the nuts to take the cylinder valves off but didnt get a wiggle after tapping the gap areas. this had me wondering about the owner saying he took it in the get a tune up overhaul etc before garaging (not sure when that was). there is a old crusty substance around each area that would need a gasket. the intake boots, crank breather cover, rocker cover, jugs on down to the clutch and oil pan. i dont think this is silicone but maybe a gasket spray maybe that copper gasket you spray? I started chipping away at it around the valve cover and it came off easy. after finished I gave it another few taps on each side and the cylinder valves starting budging, and a little wiggle they came out.
pic is the bottom of the cylinder jugs mated to the bottom end but you can see the red stuff oozing out from it.

there is alot of carbon buildup on the valves, in the valve passages and pistons.
next time Im going to take the jug valves off and pistons to clean up and replace the bottom gasket and get rid of that red kote looking stuff

when I was taking out the exhaust gasket I was surprised when it was stretching off from the exhaust outlet of the cylinder head.
I thought that these were supposed to be copper or metal but these felt and looked more like plastic that was covered with a foil. they were pretty thin and bent easily.

you can't really see too well with my camera phone how black the insides of the valve chambers are!
the valves will come out and get cleaned along with checking the top of the valve guides. hopefully it isn't going to be like the 550 cylinder heads I had with all the tips cracked or broken off. that was a pain getting that sorted out and replaced.

They make an exhaust gasket that has a metal foil and stacked felt like high temp composite construction rather than the hollow copper tube rings. The metal foil wrapped variety is what it looks like the mechanic used.
Some mechanics aren't a motor's friend using silicone gasket material,  it comes in red too...
Hope it cleans up without too much trouble.

Probably too early for your wife to get excited too much yet.
When it starts looking like the finished product she likely will...

Glad no major surprises or gotchas so far...

She got excited since sitting on it and has been wanting to ride for years even before she met me. I figured after learning to ride myself she would get the bug but without something to ride on that only goes so far. In 2020 after being diagnosed with cancer and going through treatment and recovery I started looking for something. But life gets in the way, COVID, layoffs, moving, and winters now but it is time.

small progress on the engine. Ive been allowed a couple hours here and there while getting stuff finished on our log cabin. been cleaning off the accumulated dirt and grime. luckily no more of that sploog to be found inside the cases. it must have been applied to the outside for some reason. it was up in kentucky I guess it was like the alcohol stills where they put oatmeal on the connections to not let the good stuff out.
going to see about finish cleaning it up and put back together to get started on the carbsX3

slow in progress but engine components looked good on the disassembled parts.
cleaned up the soot from the bottom of the valves nothing caked on like the parts bike. (oh yeah) so when taking off the pistons I was doing good on 1-3 and then on the 4th I started to take it out and PING! it went flying! I heard a bing which was the ac unit, then tok which was the carboard box next to it and then... nothing! tried to look for it and did not find it anywhere so I thought "hey I got some from the 500 I took apart. got one and was about to put in and it looked bigger so I checked with the others out and it was bigger. so I started to take the parts engine apart to get one clip. Opening up the parts bike looked like it has some internal rust on the valve springs and nuts. its got that orangy looking stuff all over.
back to the original engine, I started to take off the valve springs to check the condition of the rubbers and see if any valves were cracked. I started with the exhaust valves and to my surprise they did not have any rubbers and the valves looked different. the gasket kit kinda fooled me because the kit has 8 rubber valve nipples. so I put the springs and clips back on, checked the others to see they were the same and moved onto the intake valves.
the cylinder jugs looked good, not any glazing on the cylinders and the honing was still there.
replaced the bottom gasket and the ring gaskets and started back up cleaning the bases with alcohol before installing the gaskets back on moving my way back up with the cylinder valve torqing down gasket, leaving it before loosening the nuts again and retorqing back down.
I gotta get back into the storage shed to get the grease and lubes to start putting the pieces back together and get this engine back in.

the weather is starting to turn cold and not sure if it is going to be an early winter here in TN.

My 750k0 didn’t have any seals on the exhaust. As long as the guides are good it’s ok.

Can smoke a tad on start up after sitting a while but no biggie.

My cb160 has no seals intake or exhaust.

it was a surprise not seeing them but I guess it can be good and bad.
not having seen it running when I saw it makes me want to get it together soon so I can see where it is at once I get it started up.
nothing so far has been a oh $h!% moment on the engine or when looking at the carbs, it is just working on them to get it there.
the real fun will begin when I hear the engine running and then putzez out for no reason! LOL! missed those on the frankenstein bike.
hopefully we will get the driveway and the front of the garage paved to have more space in the future for this kind of stuff.

got the motor in. man this was much easier with plenty of room putting it in. didn't even have to wear the back brace.
I noticed when cleaning the cylinder head there were helicoils in a few places.
after putting the rocker head back on I didn't find any issues with the bolts.
I couldnt find my old hair bands so went ahead and made 4 more for the cause when installing the rocker.

I started on the carbs.
since I did not trust what any of the POs told me. well I know that they were gone through. but what they did and didn't do I was going to find out.
started with the titled carbs first and they were locked up alot while the donor carbs came apart easily. the 400 carbs even though rough looking they still werent that bad. on the titled carbs there was one of the bits that hangs on the main shaft that the bolt did not want to give even after lube wd40 pb etc. the other two carbs were cake on this bolt but this one would not move until it broke. I got out the dremel and cut it off. not using this one because the donor bike set carbs have the good carb frame unit that all the nuts and bolts move and work.
the two 350 carbs have aftermarket bits. only the 400 carbs have the genuine pieces but all for the 400 unfortunately.
got the bits and pieces out of most of them except emulsion tubes and the fuel passage brass. I will have to work on these a bit.
all the pieces sorted and laid out while I clean up the bodies that will be used.
also I have to take out the throttle valves. the ones that are in the carb bodies I am going to use look like the PO used a bit to free them from being stuck at one point because all four have chips broken off the bottom of the valves.
so alot of clean up and ordering of gaskets for these along with bench sync and onward.
getting there

the 400 carbs look bad but no real corrosion on the bodies but one of the metal bows that fit on the main jets was eaten through and there is just all the mac and cheese powder and well I don't know if this was a thing back in the day but the main jets have some stuff that looks to be wax around them like someone did a solder with wax? I dont know but if it worked then hey.
