‘73 750 shifter question

Reassembled the shifter bits last evening. Should I be able to shift thru all the gears without the engine turning? The engine is out of the bike on an engine stand, cylinder not on (still), but pistons are mounted and I do not want to turn the engine without the cylinder installed.

I’m able to shift into 1st, 2nd & 3rd, but it won’t go any further.

I’m asking as I was watching the Hack-a-week video on the shifter reassembly and he was able to shift thru all the gears without turning the engine over.  My concern is that since I just reassembled the transmission internals and joined the case halves, that I may have something out of place?

You normaly need to turn at least the output shaft
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

Thanks bryanj, this is the first total teardown and rebuild that I've attempted and am trying very hard to avoid mistakes!

Yes, rock either the crank or output shaft

Think of it in practice, the only time you will shift with only 1 shaft turning is at standstill going either into 1st or neutral, once moving shifting occurs with both shafts turning
