Adding oil prior to final assembly ?
« on: November 08, 2022, 09:06:51 AM »
So you've primed your oil pump and now have your motor assembled to the point where you're ready to install the barrels over the pistons; do you through in a couple of quarts of oil before you button up the motor? I think it makes sense. What do you say?

If me:
Assembly lube on crank bearings (and rods if apart) and splash oil on everything before closing cases. Rotate the trans so oil will enter everywhere.
Clutch package can go in later. New clutch fibers need to be soaked in oil for a day or  2 before.

Upper area, assembly lube on cam, rockers plus a little oil on springs and valves with tips.

A quart of oil might fit before closing the valve cover down the cam chain and downwards.

Important that eventual oil tank (depending on bike model) has enough oil to lube crank, keep the pressure up until oil is pumped back to tank.
2l in tank + 1.5l in engine. Not more in engine for me.

Would help to know what bike first as wet or dry sump makes a difference, if it was a cx500 the first pint after fitting engine needs to go in via a rocker box cover or the cam runs dry for too long

Per,do you know how much oil is carried inside the engine of a good running CB750 while the engine is operating ?
The oil tank holds most of it while the bike is running? I want to know how much of the oil is circulating inside the engine while the bike is running.  ;) :)

No, not exactly.
I think 2 liter in tank will be over max level on dipstick.
I should remember ;)
So around 1.5 liter left in engine. 3.5 in total.
A bottle (quart) is slmost one liter.

My K6 oil pump keep oil in tank since I have pulled the oil pan for inspection without dripping, around 1 liter there when parked.

I refilled when pan was back. No pan oil back in tank. If almost new filtered as pump strainer does when refill tank.

Quote from PeWe:   "around 1 liter there when parked"
This is the correct amount of oil left inside a healthy running CB750 engine when it's parked just after a ride;the correct amount of oil which remains and is meant to stay inside the crankcases there w/o being returned to the oil tank  ?

Sorry for not saying this sooner. It's a CB750 in question. So I'm thinking 1 Lt. of oil prior to starting the new engine.

I would not pre oil, if all is correct it oils up very quickly, it’s a high pressure pump.
