Honda SOHC Valve Spring Compressor.
« on: December 01, 2022, 01:09:08 PM »
Stripped down the Sandcast cylinder head today, using this home made valve spring compressor. The piece of tubing (with the cut outs to allow cap retainer removal) is held on by an Allen head screw. I used red loctite to stop the screw from unwinding and left it loose enough that the tubing does not rotate when engaged with the springs cap.....

If anyone wants to make their own, I can post dimensions?

Nice job on it John. I remember the ones honda had back in the 70s, very similar.
I'm interested too.

I love this one. It works extremely well and I use it on all kinds of other small motors too.

I’ll do a sketch with basic dimensions later this week.

Me too!  I'm most interested in the shape of the drive screw where it connects to the spring holder.

I used this…$20 and worked great.

That doesn't look as good as the ones I used in the 70s... I'm not sure I like it.
They show a big added knurled end to go on the pin end that you put on the valve face in the bottom picture opposite the cup end to the spring (of 2 picture set), yet it's not included in the case nor do they show it on the video(just the small end pin must go in the center of the valve face)

I bought one like the red box one from fleabay in uk, used it on a few 400/500 already and works great, very similar to the original honda workshop one

As requested; here are the dimensions and a few detailed photographs:

I forgot to measure the “stopper” that pulls up against the valve head, but I suspect it was just a small slug, cut off the end of 3/4” bar stock. My buddy Terry always has lots of end cuts and bits he picks up at the scrap yard not far from where he lives. It’s amazing what we find there!

I like it! I used to have an Alfa Romeo (twin overhead cams) factory tool valve compressor that was a piece of art work. A long lever with a pivot end that mounted to a cam bearing block (after the cam was removed). The fulcrum portion slid back and forth, doing two springs on one side at a time. All the parts were cast alloy, beautifully machined. They have a centre spark plug, “hemi” head, so there was another component that fastened up through that hole to keep the valves closed. Wish I knew where it went!

Nice find! That style usually has two or three different, interchangeable ends for different size valve springs.

I cherish my oldest tools, so here's another. This compressor is operated by the lever, opposite the spring retaining arms. It was given to me by a retiring machinist in the early ‘70’s, so not new! He probably used it for +40 years in the engine rebuilding shop where he worked. He was well known for rebuilding FORD Model T and A engines. I used to by parts there, when I was a kid and pestered the guys endlessly. I borrowed it so often, he gave it to me on his last day. Makes me smile, whenever I use it. It’s probably +80 years old.

As you crank the rotating lever, it drives down the arm that pushes on the valve “hat’. The arm is serrated and is locked in place by the small, sprung lever (a bit like the mechanism on a come-along winch). To release, you apply some extra pressure and lift off the locking lever.....  The gear teeth are very worn, so  it’s a bit dodgy.

I didn't find them there. Someone had got the big toolbox so it might have been in there.....
I'll add on to the valve head area to give a little more adjustment. It just works as it is on the 750 and the GL1100 heads to get the keepers out.

Nope. Not there....
But it just works as it is on the 750 and gl1100 valves.
I'm thinking of trying to get a rubber to fit the valve head(cup in picture) to add length and have a soft surface to hold the valve head.

I just extended another shop item by using a rubber stopper from the end of a walking cane (local hardware store). It was about an inch deep, so I filled 1/2 the gap with flap washers and siliconed it in place!
