Quality oil cooler options?
« on: June 26, 2023, 07:56:22 PM »
I am looking into options to add an oil cooler to my 650. Obviously a Lockhart is probably impossible to find so I’m planning to piece it together.
I’m wondering what companies I should look at for the cooler itself? Should I just pick up a factory nighthawk cooler mount that, then handle the adapter and lines of course Or is there a manufacturer you recommend. Just looking for something simple, reasonably small, black with ports pointing downward
My google results are 73 different no name ebay or Amazon parts and then Harley specific stuff mostly

I think most of the nice set ups I have seen recently started with small automotive coolers.  Figuring out nice plumbing is then the big challenge.  Look at Suzuki oil boiler set ups too.  (Oil boiler = early gsxr, katana, bandit...maybe others?
If it works good, it looks good...

I know electrical loading is always a looming issue with stock alternator but I have thought about using a scavenge pump like this to pump oil through a cooler. Might make plumbing a little simpler ?? The pump would pull from the oil tank, pump through the cooler and then circuit would return to the oil tank.

Look at images of 2014-2016 CB1100.

Best looking oil cooler and near hidden plumbing you’ll see for a while.

Google 2014 Honda CB1100 oil cooler. eBay usually as them and OEM lines for sale from $120-$170.

You might consider the OEM oil cooler setup from a 1983-1987 CB650SC.  It uses bolt-on lines with crimped flexible sections.  They can be found on eBay, often including the adaptor plate for very cheap.

This oil cooler is for the DOHC CB650 Nighthawk;will the oil filter/adapter plate fit the SOHC CB650 ?

The set up on the cb1100 is really nice. I like how the lines run behind it. I’m tying to find dimmenions of it to see if it will fit. I also found the dohc 750/900 oil coolers. Also similar to the stock nighthawk 650 cooler

The oem set up from the nighthawk doesn’t fit the earlier ones from all I’ve seen. I have a plan for the adapter, I stil may use the 650 cooler though

I like the 650 Nighthawk oil cooler pictured above;looks like it has many rows/passages for efficient cooling.
I would see if you can get a package deal w/ adapter and see how much different it is;you may just be able to fit the part with a custom piece to fit.
