Intake boot clamp tightness Cb550
« on: July 23, 2023, 10:52:43 AM »
So I’ve got all new rubbers for my 550. The intake boots between the air box and the carbs and the carbs and the engine. So my question is how tight should all of the clamps on these rubber parts be? I tightened them so that they don’t move when I try to wiggle them. I don’t want air leaks but I also don’t want to damage the brand new rubber pieces. I got all the rubber parts from common motor so I think they are all high quality but they were also not cheap. So I don’t want to over tighten the clamp.I think all my clamps are the original Honda ones. They fit in the grooves on the boots. Am I overthinking this? What does everyone do? I can’t seem to find a post about this, so apparently I’m the first on confused by this.

If they fit well in the grove and the boots are right up on the carb flange, they just need to be snug. Don’t squish and deform the rubber.

Okay sounds good. Thanks. I thought I read somewhere that the Honda clamps should be tightened essentially as far as they could go. But I’ve also read about a few people cracking aftermarket boots. So it’s good to hear someone reinforce what I believed should be the right way to do it! Thanks again!

Did you get new clamps or reusing the old clamps?

I’m reusing the old clamps. I don’t know if they are original but they look original.

Am I overthinking this?

Yes, just tighten 'em so they don't move. Have never heard they should "be tightened all the way"
