A couple of K6 project CB750s
« on: November 09, 2023, 03:12:02 AM »
It's time I get my own thread going here in the project shop. A little history, having had a new 1974 CB450 K7 having outgrown it in a year, sold it and I bought my 1st 750 new in 1975 while a senior in high school, a Planet Blue K5, but had to replace it a year later after I watched my ex cousin total it going too fast into a corner, he put it into the ditch and hit a boulder.....
There weren't any more Planet Blue in stock at the shop I was a parts man at so I got a new K6 that summer of 1976 and put 45,000 miles on it, my hound Cody had 35,000 miles on it with me, we did 5 cross country trips on it before selling it in 1983. So with that amount of miles and years I am partial to the Antares Red of the K6 and now have 2 project K6s.
The 1st project K6 I've had since 2015, and it's been in a stalled state(lack of $$). I fully stripped it down in 2015 to the frame and the motor has the top end off to rebuild as it was locked up from mice pee in 2 cylinders.
This K6 I set up from the crate for my oldest brother. He had me put on a Vetter fairing, Shoei bags and 10" rise bars. He only had it a year or 2 before taking a job in Chicago and didn't want to take it there needing to buy a house for his family so my dad bought it and rode it to work for a couple years on good days while he was service manager at Sears. Mom would ride with him until she got scared from someone almost hitting them. Dad sold it to a friend of mine that wanted a K6 in 1979/80? who rode it until 1988 when it puked oil on his dress pants on the way to work one morning. He parked it when he got home that night under his lean-to, then bought a shed to put it in @ 1994 where the mice took up residence on the bike with a 2 story penthouse condo......a play nest nest in the tool tray and a birthing chamber under the carbs and air filter..... it has 25,000 miles on it.
The second K6 I got in a package deal a year ago of 6 rolling frames, 4 with motors, and a separate K5 motor with an 836 kit, SS2 cam and the ports are polished, I need to open up the bottom end as it sat upside down in my friend's shed without the oil pan so I want to inspect it as well as new gaskets in the top end. The cam looks like it has low miles on it. I also need to strip off the black and red paint job on that K5 motor as there's lots of peeling paint, my friend said he bought it in a chopper. Hopefully the hotrod K5 motor will live again over this winter to go in my brother/dad's K6, until I can rebuild the original motor for it.
I'm not sure how many miles are on the 2nd K6 as someone put a K7/K8 front end on it including the gauges at some point of it's life, but the motor kicks over still.
I also have another K5 that is my summer ride, it was a friend's who passed away in 2017 so I bought it from his estate and it only needed a soft cleaning of the carbs to get it running as I had taught him how to put his bike away properly when he got it in 1980. It's been a blast to ride as it had been 1983 since I was on a 750. I've been restoring goldwings and riding them since 1998. I missed the ride of the 750s.

The projects....
1st is my brother's K6 as I found it in my friend's shed in 2014 and getting it home for the teardown. The motor was locked solid even after 2 weeks of soaking the cylinders in PB Blaster. The frame has pock holes from mice pee on the upper rails near the battery so I will either fill them and repaint the frame or I bought a NOS unstamped from this summer that I might use instead and transfer the numbers to...to be determined yet. This project has been in storage boxes since 2015 so I need to get back at it. It sill has a Vetter fairing and lowers from 1976.

The second K6(with turn out exhaust system)was pretty grungy so will take so time. Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet.
Pictures of the K6 and the lot I bought last year along 2 K4s with motors, sold one of the motors last year. A 3rd K4 frame, a second K6 frame, and a K8 frame.

The K5 hotrod ex chopper motor is promising... SS2A cam, Titanium keepers, polished intakes. Just have to open it up and inspect it after cleaning out the bottom end of and dust/dirt from being left open without an oil pan.....then a repaint to stock color and replace the peeling chrome covers with polished aluminum covers.
The valve cover is now in Hondaman's shop, cut open on the top(for his inspecting the motors he works on to check oil flow to the top ends before he fires them up)

Before I can get going on these project K6s I have to finish up some work on a friend's K4 that is on the lift, so it might be a little while before I can get going on them but hopefully within the month.....
I've been collecting parts so it's time.

No not yet John. I haven't had time to get to it.
I have a late repair of water damage on a friend's house, the outside from improper roof flashing by a roofing company we recommended to him 8 years ago.  Pretty extensive damage to cut out and repair.
And then today.....I went and did a thing....
While setting waiting for my burger order to be brought to my table, I was perusing Craigslist......and there looking back at me.....
Was another K6 just posted 30 minutes before. .....get it out of my yard for $100..... so me...I sent the text...I'll take the 750. He replies back cash. Me...yup can bevthere in half a hour. He sent me the address and I had to stop and cash a check and another stop at a friend's to borrow his ramps to get it in the back of the chrysler mini van.
I get there and he says you aren't going to get this in there.... yes I will. Lower the fork tubes 2", remove the gauges, headlight and tank  and fold the handlebars back. In like Flin....
So instead of 2, now I have 3 K6 projects...but this one is pretty sweet other than a few bruises from the 1st owners hitting a car. I bought it from the 2nd owner who bought it in the early 2000s after it sat more than 10 years after the accident, he got it running and rode it 3-4 years,  last on the road in 2008. Motor kicks over. Has a repop tank w/K4 petcock on the left and rusty inside but I know how to resurrect it and also have a fairly decent tank from my dad's/brother's bike that could go on it. So this might be the first one to get going. 🤔

The guy says the rear fender must have gotten broken setting in the garage some how and he wasn't sure how.
It's only got 11,082 miles on it. 20 miles from home......not a bad afternoon run and grab! I even have the original title from 1976 while I was working as parts manager and may have even set it up from the crate at the late night set up parties we had to stay and participate in because of the amount of bikes being sold.

I thought I had a picture of the mileage, but didn't so I got my jacket back on and went out and took one....
I even had a LEO come by and do a vin check on it and the 78 I bought last year in CT. He confirmed the last registered owner was the seller today and last year registered was 2008. I think I got more than a fair deal on it.....

I was thinking that the ignition switch was an aftermarket because it didn't have the numbers on the face and a recut key, so I pulled the switch today and cleaned up the edges and found it has T1645 number. I ordered 1 off feebay to see if it'll work. Anyone have any leftover T1645 keys?

In-between hacking, got the creeping crud the other night... anyhow I set up my speedo gauge repair board with the 4" hole and proceeded to tap the new crimp ring from Marcel on the K4 tachometer, so one more thing checked off the list on that....

Then the hacking started up again and got a splitting headache so shut down the shop lights and headed up stairs to try to relax the noggin for a bit. A storm is moving in and the pressure is dropping to boot.

Well dang it's been a month since my last reply.... thought I'd better do an update....
I'm feeling better finally and work projects as well as the holidays and family stuff, winter storm clean up etc, so time to get back to it.....
I have been collecting more parts, a NOS right hand control for this K6 and some more used parts a local guy was selling, a good K2-K6 seat, a couple wheels for rebuilding and another good airbox(for my other project 750s).  And a mix matched(different fork lowers) K1 fork assembly with guages and a good unicorn tree mount.

And I ordered a 30L ultrasonic cleaner to replace the small harbor freight cleaner as I have a couple sets of carbs to clean for a friend as well as 4-5 sets of carbs I have to clean still, and a few more tools, a bore scope(side and end cameras), right angle C clip pliers,  and a battery load tester(rather than old-school shadetree technology hitting with a headlight load and volt meter). I think the battery from the latest K6 might be coming back to life on the charger???
But before I can get more progress on the project, I still have the friend's K4 to finish on the lift......

Stu….. you were asking about fork tubes? I only have one set and pretty sure they are K0-1? Pretty sure you wanted a later style? John D.

I've got some later ones, but they are longer than OEM. One is 6" over, I think the other is 3" over.

Thanks Mark but I'll stay with stock length. I never was into the longer tubes and still not.
