Bracketology Baby!
« on: March 15, 2007, 11:35:43 AM »
It's here and in full swing!  I've got Florida loosing to Oregon in the elite 8, Kansas smashing all commers all the way to the final four, Georgetown tacking down UNC to go to the 4, but altimately it will be Kansas and Ohio at the big dance and Ohio will barely win it.

Hopefully UK will fall in the first round to Villanova, but I don't think it will happen.  I wish KY would have horrible seasons so they would fire Tubby Smith and bring in a real coach.

Tell me your predictions.

I can't stand basketball and I'm not a Kentucky fan, but I wonder why you say Tubby isn't a "real" coach.

From Wikipedia - "Over his 15 seasons as a head coach, Smith has had 13 consecutive 20-win seasons, making the NCAA Tournament each of those years. In 2005, he joined Roy Williams, Nolan Richardson, Denny Crum and Jim Boeheim as the only head coaches to win 365 games in 15 seasons or less. Entering the 2007 season, Smith's career record was 365-133 and his .733 winning percentage was eighth among active coaches."

No doubt, those are great stats for nearly all other avenues of basketball- but not for UK.  UK is the winningest team in the history of the sport.  An above average season just doesn't cut it.  They need to have sensational seasons every year.  When Patino coached at UK, he suffered only 6 losses at home in 9 years.  Now THAT is an awesome statistic.

Due to the years of Tubby Smith, UK has went from being one of the biggest names- if not THE biggest name- in college basketball to just another team that has an above average winning season.  It's like driving a corvette Z06 to work everyday for 10 years in a row, and then being forced to drive a mid '90's mustang- while the mustang is good, and the dream car of some, it just doesn't stand up against the Z06.  The UK fans are constantly left with the reminder of the good old days when we used to have a corvette.  UK needs to go shopping.

Again, I don't follow the sport: Is there a coach that has won the championship every year that he's coached? Or even made it to the Final Four every year? I just find it hard to believe that, if Tubby left, a new coach could accomplish that. Especially when you consider that college teams change every year. Looking at his 241-71 record (wikipedia) he seems a fine coach. When Pitino came here to Louisville, everyone expected the championship to immediately be handed over. That, obviously didn't happen. Louisville used to have a Corvette too. So did Duke, etc., etc.
